RE: Alexander Holmes Hardy
Good morning

Captain Alexander Holmes Hardy is in a grave in a little village by the side of Strangford Loch in Northern Ireland. I have had the information for some time but can't find the e-mail from the local church which sent me the image of the grave headstone. The image of the grave headstone was sent to me by the local church minister

I identified where he died by speaking to the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Belfast and then it was a hunt the nearest cemetery to his place of death and also trace the local church to speak to the Minister

Captain Hardy's death was incorrectly recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on their Debt of Honour Data Base when they showed that he had been killed when RFA War Sepoy had been bombed at Dover in 1943. His death was also recorded on the CWGC Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill, London under the ships name of War Sepoy. When RFA War Sepoy was bombed there were no fatal casualties. In fact Captain Hardy wasn't even onboard being in command of RFA Thermol at the time and neither him nor his ship were even in Dover. The CWGC have removed his name from their data base (but not from their data base index) and the ships plaque on the Merchant Navy Memorial will be removed when that section of plaques needs repair - i.e. it is still there now. (Panel 117 refers)

I hope this helps

Chris

Alexander Holmes Hardy
Captain Hardy was a Captain the Royal Fleet Auxiliary not the Royal Navy. His last command was the naval tanker RFA Thermol. He was in command of the Thermol from 3 October 1941 until 13 December 1942. I have added his photo and the photo of his grave to this record

Details of the Thermol cane be found at - http://www.historicalrfa.org/rfa-thermol-ships-details#

Gilbert Percy
Hi: do you have a family connection to Gilbert? I am a descendant of his daughter Marcella. I have info for the other siblings, but not who Emily married - do you know his full name? Also, I had not heard of Chichester Percy, although I knew Marcella Chaplin had a brother Chichester Chaplin. There is one more sibling - Florence Charlotte Harrington Percy, born in Quebec City 18 April 1851.
