Horn's Creek update
see message below mine....

I attended the genealogy seminar in Edgefield this past week-end and took a side trip to Horn's Creek. The work that has been done is GREAT. They are by no means through with what needs to be done, but I was impressed by what had been accomplished. I also learned how to drive from town to the church! The Road has been fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Ryan graves look GREAT.

I was very happy to be able to visit the site of the ongoing project to
preserve and protect the Historic Horn's Creek Church in Edgefield SC this
weekend. It was truly amazing and beautiful!

Just briefly:

1. A 6 foot chain link fence with lock has been installed to protect the
property
2. The caretaker's cottage is well underway, with only interior work to be
done
3. The Cemetery repair and upkeep project of Miss Clarice Wise is also well
underway with several of the toppled tombstones already re set. The grounds
of the Cemetery are in very good repair.
4. The project of re-finishing the Church will come next, after the cottage
is rented and a caretaker is on the property.
5. For now, the Church roof is in good repair, so that the interior of the
building itself will not deteriorate any further.

Photos and info about how to help with this project at:

please check this out
Please attend the Edgefield genealogy conference in September and make a donation to the Edgefield Historical Society. They have published a booklet about Horns Creek Chirch which features the RYAN family.

RE: Unity Ryan marker
Just so you know the road leading to this church is very bad to drive as it is crushed rock and has holes in it so be prepared for that.

Unity Ryan marker
I have been to this cemetery a number of times and each time I looked for her marker. I have found plenty of Ryans there and the Swearingens also but no visible marker for Unity. There are some stones under a tree but this cemetery has been so badly vandalized it is heartbreaking to see.

Thought you'd like to see, looks as though the stones in this cemetery, several of them, have been professionally cleaned. This one of Samuel Dusenbury is especially nice.

Yes, I have established that Garret was my relative. Although I'm sure there are errors, I have his line up to the present. Thanks for the message and information!

RE: Kirtons
Sarah, that is correct. My grand mother was Harriett Jane Kirton, daughter of John Martin Kirton, who was the son of Rev. James Mundling Kirton, who was the son of Daniel Kirton, who was the brother of Stephan Wesley Kirton. I love to find family. If I can be of further help, please advise. Gail

RE: Kirtons
Sarah, I hope this is not to confusing but here goes. I find no Stephan Wilson Kirton. I find a Samuel Wilson or Wilson Samuel. In my family this is what I have:

Stephan White Kirton (1838-1915) son of Daniel and Jane (Baker) Kirton: Married Mary Esther Baker (who I have a picture of). He was born in Horry County. Died in Williamsburg County. Buried in the Kirton Grave Yard in Williamsburg County. He was a minister. The info was given by A. P. Thompson (another distant relative) and the undertaker was Rich Morris of Bryans, SC That is in Williamsburg County. Stephan White Kirton is the brother to my GG GRandfather James Mundling Kirton. They all moved from Horry to Williamsburg before the Civil War.

I show a Stephan Wesley Kirton 1811-1876, son of Thomas Kirton 1765-1816 and Sarah Dewitt Kirton 1774 -?. He married Sarah B. Pritchard. He was a brother to my ggg grandfather Daniel Kirton. Born and died in Horry County. He is buried in the Kirton Cemetery in Horry County. Children of Stephan and Sarah were: Mary Ann, Mary E., Caroline, Joseph Wesley, William M., Sarah M., Thomas S. Amanda V and Cornilia L.

Many people get these two confused because they don't know about the Kirton Grave Yard in Williamsburg County. (It took me 5 years to find it) Alot of people on Ancestry have my Stephan with his DC attached married to Sarah B. I am not saying I am perfect but I to verify everything I put down. If the name Stephan Wesley is wrong please advise. Gail

RE: Samuel Dusenbury
I am pretty sure I did mention the date difference to him as I dont like posting pics of stones that dont match to the T but I figured with all the info provided it had to be the right man.

Is he in your family tree? Do you know of any Martin or Green that are connected to him or you?

saw you were searching for Causey, etc
I see that you you stated on your profile that you were searching for Causey etc and I wanted to let yu know I photographed most of the ones at Union Methodist in Conway and I feel pretty safe in saying that whole cemetery is related to one another as they are pretty much all in my family tree.

Samuel Dusenbury
I saw you had posted to Samuel's memorial that he was your 4th great grandfather. I just wanted to let you know I photographed his stone today and has nice info on the stone. Plus the date listed on the memorial is incorrect and thought you may want to compare it with your tree/records.
Peace and good health,
Angie

Hi Sarah, On my picture it said "Mrs. S. W. Kirton". I believe this to be the wife of Stephen White Kirton,(Mary Ester Baker). Stephan White Kirton was the brother of my gg grandfather James M. Kirton.
