Thank you ever so kindly for contributing the photo of my 3X great grandfather. It was a blessing to discover, and I am so grateful to you!

Oh please, please do! When I've found some things others need to change, I've found some of mine as well! Some I've even had to send to edit@findagrave to merge because I don't have the ability to include all my extra finds onto the original. "Rolls eyes at self!"

Thanks, Bobby, for the photo of Schoppenhorst gravestone. Because of your efforts, burial in Eastern Cemetery is confirmed. The old marker survived the years waiting for you to uncover. Appreciate!

Group Burial Zachary Taylor National Cemetery
dear Bobby, hope you are doing fine, merry Christmas and all the best for 2015 from Holland. We have been in touch before. I would like your permission to use a picture you took for my book project about the temporary American military GELA Cemetery in Sicily. My book is not finished yet, hope early next year.

I have the following for you:

The 316th Troop Carrier Group participated in operation Husky I (9 July 1943 - invasion of Sicily) with 33 C-47 transport planes, carrying elements of the 505th Regimental Combat Team. The Group lost two airplanes. One of the planes belonged to the 44th Squadron. The transport plane (tail number 42-23492)had a crew of four: Captain Lawrence D. Lichliter from Washington D.C. (pilot), Flight Officer Harry H. Pawlowski from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (copilot), Technical Sergeant Olin J. Thornburg from Lincoln, Nebraska (crew chief) and Sergeant John M. Leonard from Danbury, Connecticut (radio operator). After dropping the paratroopers, the plane was shot down by enemy fire. The plane crashed south of Creci Road at Santa Croce Camerina. The remains of the crew members were found in the wreckage. They were first buried by the infantry in an isolated grave. The men could not be identified individual and their remains were taken to the Gela Cemetery. Grave Registration Officers tried to identify the men, but this was impossible. The men received a Group Burial. They were buried in grave G-75-899 on 13 August 1943. After the war their remains were repatriated and reburied at a midway point from their homes in Grave E-80 (group Burial) of the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Kentucky.

Of course you will be credited and notified when the book will be finished

RE: Howard Graham
That would be great. I've had to take a break from researching that side of my family. I'm planning a reunion for a different branch. I know Charles Birk Plot "on a lot of A Schaurer" Section B Range 1 Lot 8, Joseph A Gates Section 3 Lot 259 Grave 3. He is listed as being in the same section as Frank Birk, Margret Birk and Ruby Birk Gates. Also Howard Graham Section 7 Row 13 Grave 1. As you know, he doesn't have a headstone. I would really like to go back out there soon.

RE: Howard Graham
I am so sorry. I forgot I had requested a photo. I received information from UofL that stated he does not have a headstone. Actually, none of my family there has a headstone. I went one Saturday & looked a little bit. I wasn't able to find any of my relatives. Then I got side tracked by some stones that needed the weeds removed. Thank you for trying to find him though.

Thank you!
Mr. Hunt, thank you for both your service to our Country, and to the families of Eastern Cemetery.
I very much appreciate the information you provided Adele about the goings-on at Eastern. I understand that you added my Gr-Gr-Grandfather's memorial (Find A Grave Memorial# 89357504, William Elzie Garrett) to the system based on records, but since there was no photo, it is highly likely that he is one of the numerous, ahem, "misplaced" remains? Hopefully, over the years the remains will be recovered, and the resting place adequately marked. For now, I'm thankful to know someone is doing something about caring for the place, since my distance precludes it. God bless.

RE: Eastern Cemetery
Let's see ... just to set the record straight, I don't have a map of, but I know where is, the cemetery. I just walked around ... a lot ... several times. In 2008, I was here and most likely unfamiliar with Find-A-Grave. I kind of remember when Eastern Cemetery came under scrutiny and thinking that it was rather disgusting and disrespectful and hurtful to those buried there and their families.

RE: Eastern Cemetery
In answer to each of your replies:

(1) I started off trying to find the grave by section & row numbers. I got nuthin'. Then I did a lot of walking (but no crawling around in the brush). After a couple of hours, I gave it up ... for the time being. I was going to go back, but in view of what you've said, I won't and will, in fact, unclaim it. I will, however, let Ms 'J' know of you, in case she has any questions.

(2) I'm not in competition, either. Never did me any good to compete with anyone about anything, anyway. :-) I'm doing this because I came across - without seeking it - photos of my parents' graves, which I really appreciated (not that I didn't have my own, but still, it's nice to see someone posted them). I thought maybe I could pay it forward.

RE: Eastern Cemetery
Hi, Bobby. I did claim it, yes, but I feel unsuccessful in having been able to help. I did, however, reported the problem with a link to an article about the deplorable state of the cemetery. I'd also emailed the person who'd made the request, Ms J. Catlett-DeStefano (#48414875), though I didn't hear back from her. That was Thanksgiving week.

I am new at this but will be happy to unclaim it and let you claim it ... or just turn it over to you, if that's how it's done (just tell me how) and perhaps you can help out better than I.

RE: Thank you
I appreciate your kindness!

If I should get back out there I'll definitely get in touch with you first.

One thing I'm not sure about is if the marker is actually over where he is... I read that many more people rest at Eastern than should, some 'stacked'.

Needless to say that wasn't very nice of them.

Thanks again.

Thank you
Bobby, it has been many years since I visited my father's grave (due to the situation at Eastern and its disrepair it was very difficult to locate his grave, which was unmarked at the time.

That day I finally got to say goodbye to him, and planted some sweet alyssum on his final resting place.

Today I looked and when I saw your photo of his marker, it made me feel so good to see him acknowledged. I thank you, most sincerely, for taking that photo.

Why do you have double pages for some people in this cemetery? Would you please either delete or combine the same memorials? It's very confusing to have two memorials for the same person. Here are 2 of them that are the same people 125531437,125531436 and 125517302,125517301.

RE: Gwathmey
Hi Bobby-
Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. Autumn is in full bloom here and yard work seems to be taking up a lot of my free time. I think Sophia was originally interred in Eastern and when George and Sophia lost a few other children in infancy, I think they relocated Sophia (daughter) to Cave Hill because the lots were larger and other family members were there as well. I have another family member that did that in Maine (The Wymans). Apparently they remove the remains, but leave the gravestones sometimes. I always enjoy hearing from you. Reviewing burial journals is no easy task! I hope you are doing well and are having a good weekend.

Talk to you soon-
