Armstrongs of Ontario Co. NY and Columbia Co. PA
Dear Carol,

I have been working with several ARMSTRONG researchers to sort out ARMSTRONG families in Ontario/Yates/Seneca counties of NY and Columbia/Juniata/Mifflin counties of PA. Several have referred me to you, including Kathy Alvis Patterson (with whom you corresponded back in 1987). I just spent a week in western NY researching these families and would like to correspond with you. Could you go drop me an email at so that we can correspond?

Dan Gunderson
RE: Erick Gunderson
Thanks Carol. My mother is from northern Minnesota as well (northwest corner). Dad is from near Fargo.

A few questions...

1) Did Martha use the last name of Erickson or Gunderson as her maiden name? Her brother Erick used Gunderson for a surname. She was born in 1850 and they didn't immigrate until 1862 or 1864. I would have guessed she would have used Gunderson. Maybe Erick was old enough to have kept Gunderson in America and Martha, still being a child, switched to the American custom of keeping the surname of your parent.

2) So two of Erick's boys married his sister's (Martha's) girls? That's interesting. They must have looked at first cousins in a little different way than we can typically bear to look today.

3) So siblings Erick and Martha are each your great grandparents.

Oh boy, I might have to take more interest in all this genealogy stuff. Not sure I need another hobby!

Thanks for the pictures. I am a great great grandson of Erick through John Alfred, Elmer, and then Charles. We'd enjoy any history, stories, or pictures that may exist regarding the family, life in America, or their immigration from Norway.

My family is in Baraboo, Wisconsin.

Eli Ostbol Nilsdatter (1814 -1901)
Hi Carol,

I don't know if this is the correct forum to post this.

First let me introduce myself. My name is grace gunderson – falcone (born 1958).

My father is Maitland John Gunderson (1930 – living) son of Ernest Arthur Gunderson (1900- 1981) and Ruth Gladys Elvira Erickson (1903-1989).

Ernest Arther Gunderson's parents were George Erick Gunderson (1870 – 1960) and Jennie Armstrong (1878-1959) daughter of Martha Erikson (1850-1897).

Martha Erickson's parents were Gunder Gjeterud Erickson (1814-1900) and Eli Ostbol Nilsdatter (1814 – 1901).

Recently through Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) matching a distant cousin living in Norway contacted me.

He is the ggg grandson of Peder Nielsen (1811-1888) see below.

Peder Nielsen
• Født: 20 Feb 1811, Østbøl, Botner, Brandval, Hedmark, Norge
• Døpt: 10 Mar 1811, Brandval, Hedmark, Norge 101

• Ekteskap (2): Karen Pedersdatter den 7 Nov 1858 i Brandval , Hedmark, Norge
• Død: 10 Mar 1888, Brandval, Hedmark, Norge 77 år gammel
• Begravet: 20 Mar 1888, Brandval, Hedmark, Norge

Ingeri Eriksdatter

Født: 1778, Botner, Brandval, Hedmark, Norge
Døpt: 27 Sep 1778, Brandval , Hedmark, Norge
Ekteskap: Niels Pedersen

Peder Siblings

1. Peder Nielsen+ - 20 Feb 1811 - 20 Mar 1888
2. Eli Nilsdatter - 18 Nov 1814
3. Anne Nilsdatter - 30 Jan 1817
4. Arne Nilsen - 27 Nov 1818

He said our connection is Eli Ostbol Nilsdatter (1814 -1901) my ggg grandmother (3rd) who is the sister his ggg grandfather Peder Nielsen (1811 -1888).

He sent me the link of his tree and it looks like Peder and Eli have the same parents [Niels Ostbol Peder (1799-1857) and Ngeri Botner Erickson (1799-1819)].

I thought this was very interesting.

Through I am able to look at several family trees and most all who list Peder Nielsen have him born 1811 but passing a year later in 1812.

I wrote back to him saying I would investigate this a little further.

I did send him the link of "find a grave" where Eli Ostbol Nilsdatter (1814 -1901)is featured along with her husband Gunder Gjeterud Erickson 1814-1900.

He wanted to know a little about how and where they ended up after leaving Norway.

I guess the reason why I am writing is to share this with you since it looks like you have a very extensive family tree that includes Eli and Gunder and many more common ancestors of mine.

I am very new at genealogy, but this I found to be something interesting and wanted to make note of and for others too.

I have not researched the gunderson side extensively because I have been trying to nail dowm my mother's side who are from the Azores Islands.

If you are interested, I can write this person back and ask if he would not mind sharing his family link and email address in order to correspond.

Thank-you for your time and the wonderful work you have done preserving our families history.

Best, grace gunderson-falcone

Hi Carol, thank you for your service in the USAF.
While out taking volunteer photos, I came across Art and Rose at Ft Snelling. So nice to see who they were.
Headstone photos are up on their memorials now.

Thanks for posting the pictures of the Gundersons. I have been researching the Johnson, Gunderson and Springsted family. Erick Gunderson is my 2nd Great granduncle. I believe my grandmother Mabel Johnson Springsteds sister Blanche Johnson Springsted went to live with Erick and Sarah after their mother Christine Lund Johnson passed away in 1908. Christine was married to Martin Johnson-Nesset. Bertha Gunderson is my 2nd Great Grandmother. My grandmother Mabel Johnson and her sister Blanche married brothers. Mabel married Jay Springsted and Blanche married his brother Cecil Springsted.

Are the other Gundersons related in any way. I believe Ernest had Collins Store before Collins or was it the store where Biganeks is now? Thanks for your interest and support. Grace

I deleted a duplicate that I had made. His middle name was Irving, from where ever I had entered the information on that one. In case you wanted to add that to yours; that was the only difference between the two. Thanks, Grace

RE: Photo of D.W. Armstrong headstone
It is interesting that we have a mutual interest in the Armstrongs. They are difficult to trace, between the border towns of Hudson WI and Stillwater MN. Your information and photo of David has been very helpful!

The Armstrong Family
Hi, Carol

I am also researching the Armstrong family and have created profiles on Ancestry. Would you mind if I copied the tombstones and other pictures of the Armstrongs on your site to those Ancestry records?
