Hi Sherry - I began the process too, and have sent you an email.

Sorry you are spending $ to obtain the death cert.

Glad to help and find your Jack. Pouring down rain for a few days and not able to clean marker and get a good pic. But I will do that when the rain clears. The center to look up death certs is near the cemetery and I did not make it there due to all the rain. I hope for a calm rest of the week!

Blessings-

You are so very welcome! Block 17 in the cemetery was their "babyland" and there are so many babies buried there. I try to watch over them! And thank you so much for your kind words. I know your parents and grandparents must be smiling from heaven.

I hope to view the death cert for Jack this Saturday. The brief transcription of the death certificate for Jack, has a middle initial of P, and date of death is 02 Jan 1916. Father is listed as Roy S. Smith, and mother is Myrtle S. Miller. Jack died in Everett, Snohomish Co. WA.

The above info is from the Washington State digital archives. Let me know if this link doesn't work-

Jack Smith #140861950
Hi Sherry-

I do have a picture of Jack's marker, but it is not very good. I will add this one however, so you are able to at least see it right away. And I hope for better weather this weekend when I go back to the cemetery.

I checked the lot book and the lot owner was Roy Smith, so I am sure this is the correct location - Lot 160.

Jack's first name is not on the marker, and the temp marker is very faded. But it still readable.
Jack was buried on 1-3-16. The lot book entry names him as Baby Jack Smith, thus the wording on the marker, ended up being Baby Smith.

Will let you know when I load another picture!

So I was out at the cemetery today and looked for Jack Smith in block 17. I saw "Baby Smith" in block 17. I took the picture but couldnt verify that it was your person so I havent entered it... Maybe the other person that goes to Evergreen ( Tami) has verified it??) Anyway.. I have the picture but will wait to enter it until I get in to the office to verify the name

RE: Jack Smith memorial #140861950
Hi Sherry-

So great to hear from you - as I love to talk about block 17. I have photographed most of Block 17 and will double check this week for a marker for Jack. I have uncovered about 100 markers in this block, as many are temp markers, which were placed for infants. I can poke around for a temp marker and find the exact spot. But I also have cem rec and the plat map and will photograph the exact location. I can do that this week :)

No need to put in a photo request, as I go to the cemetery often and will gladly photo the grave site.

Thank you for your message! I will add dates to Jack's memorial. I am able to get a death cert for him and would try, if you would like. But cemetery records indicate he is buried here, so you may not need the death cert :)

Would you like me to transfer this memorial to you?

I am the great grand daughter of Roy Smith.
I have records regarding the birth and death of Jack. He was born 2 Jan 1916 and he died 2 Jan 1916.
Did you visit the cemetery and get the info to make this memorial? If so was there a headstone? I would love a photo if so.
I'll request a photo. But I would appreciate if you could add those dates for Jack.
Thank you making the memorial. I know it would mean a great deal to my great grandparents. I have been unable to get his death certificate so I had no knowledge regarding where he was buried.
So thank you.

RE: Re: Woodlawn Cemetery
Sherry,

I spent several hours at the cemetery on my last visit and located about a dozen different gravesites.

The Woodlawn cemetery is a bit run down and often there is noone in the office. Most of the grave stones are at grround level. It takes a little time to learn the layout and then find the gravesites.

The cemetery is located in Compton, CA which is just south of LA and has a reputation for being a troubled area. I have felt completly safe whenever I have been onsite. Of course they are only open from 8 am to 3 pm so lots of daylight.

I will be making another trip over there in the coming weeks and will let you know what I find.

Hi Sherry,

Yes, I had heard the same thing about this cemetery. Its sad that so many people's relatives are in this cemetery and then no one wants to go there because of the area.
Anyway, let me know if someone steps up to the plate. If not, I'll try to get over there in a couple of weeks.
You are welcome.... and take care,
Suzy

Hi Sherry,

You are welcome. I do believe there is someone that does go to Woodlawn to take photos. If someone does not take photos in the next 2 weeks, I will see if I can get over there. I have not been to that particular cemetery yet. It is in Compton which is not a good area. I heard that some years ago it got run down, not sure if they got it cleaned up or not.
