Eleanora Eva and Ray Hays
Hi,
Thanks so much for your work on the Pine Grove cemetery! Without it I would not have been able to solve a genealogical puzzle. I'm grateful!

And, just to let you know, you have Eva Eleanora Hays indicated as the child of Ray Hays, but in fact she was his first wife (second wife was Maude Langman Hays). Eva's maiden name was Hartman. Ray was living with her mother (Eliza A [Weller] Hartman) and sisters (Martha [Hartman] Eddy and Almira C Hartman) in the 1910 census.

Maude died after Ray, so of course she would have had their headstone made as a couple's headstone; this makes Eva's look like a child's but that's not correct. As far as I can tell, Ray never had children with either wife.

Thanks again,
Meredith Lane

If you know how to take over the Grave Memorial, you can then add what you want. I've been trying to get over there to retake the photo. The cemetery is very over grown. I've gone out a couple of times and tried to clean up some with a friend. We're only good for working for about 2 hours when we go. Our bodies tire out. Am trying to get a younger friend to go with me and bring a chain saw and a weedeater. If you don't want to take over the memorial, send me the paper or information and I will be happy to put it on. Keep up the good work.

North San Juan Cemetery
Hi Kat.. After re-reading your initial response.. I noticed that you had mentioned North San Juan Cemetery which sparked something.. so I checked the written family history that has been handed down to me and saw that Hannah's neice, "Minerva H. Benton" (Henrietta's daughter) had died in 'Sanwan, California' and I can only assume that whomever wrote the information must have surely meant 'San Juan'. The only other information that I have on Minerva was that she was born 6 July 1863/65 and died 10 Aug 1865. She is the only child of Henrietta's 7 children that I've been unable to locate. I've been periodically checking the find a grave site to see if she has been found and entered but no such luck after 2 yrs of checking. Do you think you could check your photo records to see if you by chance photographed a marker for her?? I realize the odds are slim of finding a baby marker from that long ago, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask if you had any information regarding a Benton grave in that area..

Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated!!

Sincerely,
Sandi L.

RE: Cherokee, Nevada County
Hi Kat..

Thank you so much for your response and all of the valuable information you've passed on to me. According to his wife Hannnah's obiturary, Martin died in 1891 in Cherokee, Nevada County and then Hannah and the children moved to Nevada City after his death. Hannah, my great grand aunt, eventually ended up back in Ohio with her sister, my great grandmother, Henrietta Benton. Hannah lived out the rest of her years in Ohio & Michigan with the Bentons. I've been able to locate her sons, Walter C & Lester in Arizona, as well as a few of Walter's children who died as infants and were buried at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Nevada County. That is why I thought perhaps Martin was also buried at Pine Grove, since that's where I found his grandchildren.

I figured you would be the person to ask since you were the photographer for the majority of the markers at that cemetery & many others thru out the county. Unfortunately, I have to conduct all of my research online & am unable to visit the History Library you mentioned as I live in Ohio. So please know, that I am extremely appreciative of folks like you who go above and beyond in your service to this site.

Thank you so much for your efforts..

Sincerely,
Sandi L.

Memorial Transfer
Dear Kat,

MANY THANKS for doing this work, for those of us who can't be in the right place, and have no idea where relatives and ancestors might be buried. Your work is invaluable to us.

I have discovered the memorial for Thomas G. Turner (Find A Grave Memorial# 96898421)in Pine Grove Cemetery (Nevada Co. CA). He was the oldest son of a 2nd great grandfather.

I'm hoping you will transfer the maintenance of his memorial to me.
Sincerely, Sandy N. "CousinshuntII"

Hi Kat.. I was hoping you might be able to help me. I am looking for Martin Jauch who died in 1891 in Cherokee. I am not sure of the cemetery but I thought perhaps you may have run across his tombstone and happened to have a photo of it in your files?? I have searched Ancestry and find a grave and have been unable to find any record of where he is buried. Can you help??!!

Thanks so much,

Sincerely,

RE: Chivell Family
I am, at this point, presuming that these CHIVELL's are related to my husbands family, but no proof at the moment. They may be related to the brother of my husband's great-grandfather, William J CHIVELL (or J. William Chivell.) My Find A Grave number is: 47286490 and thanks!

Chivell Family
Kat, thank you for taking photos of the Chivell's in the Old Elm Ridge Cemetery in Grass Valley. I believe that these people are my husband's grandmother's family. Her name is Alma Chivell Norgaar and she is buried in Hayfork Cemetery, Hayfork, Trinity County, CA (just in case someone might be looking for her.) We all appreciate your dedication -- thank you!! DR
Shuey memorial
Hi Kat,

Thanks for the photo for the Shuey plot. I do believe the surname is Shuey, as I normally trace the letters with my finger when I have difficulty reading them. CA Death Records also lists two individuals who died in Nevada County with the surname Shuey, so I've made a memorial for both in Old Elm Ridge, stating that this is most likely the location of their graves.

CA Death Records didn't list any Shuly's who died in Nevada County & the census didn't list any Shuly's ever residing in Nevada County.

Thanks again.

Thank You for going the extra mile to help us with our research for our Ancestors. I was told by family that a Great grandfather was buried in Nevada City, but never knew who. You have solved that mystery. Thank You!
