RE: David Kato image
The rest of the copyrighted images are gone now. If you took that photo of his grave marker showing his dates, please consider uploading it to his Find A Grave memorial or to his Wikipedia page. As I said, there are so many conflicting birth dates floating around that the WP page especially needs something as a solid source. WP acts just like an encyclopedia: statements must have a verifiable source and a photo of the marker would be perfect.

Thank you, J

RE: David Kato image
Hello, Anonymous -

Thanks for responding so quickly, though I'm disappointed that the photo wasn't available to use. I'm awaiting Anne-Marie's response to my question about permission to use her images. Since the site is a US Corporation headquartered in the US, US copyright laws apply. I'm sure your home country has its own copyright laws, too.

Do you really have a photo of his grave marker??? Then upload it here, BY ALL MEANS, if you don't mind! Please provide a caption giving the location and PLEASE give yourself credit as the photographer and that you grant permission for it to be here. I think your member name of "Anonymous" would be okay as it will link back to your member page. If you are in Uganda, I understand that it's dangerous to have your name circulating as a Kato supporter.

If you want, you can add a copyright statement right onto your photo. Though few people do so, I know it's allowed. If the word "Copyright" is too awkward for you, the capital letters CR or a small case "c" within a circle are abbreviations for it. At least use the term in the photo caption if not the on the photo itself: "Copyright, Anonymous [or whatever name you choose to use], 2011".

Then, Mr. Kato's Wikipedia page will have a reference to cite for his real birth date. There are so many versions of it in articles across the Internet, it's been frustrating. Your photo would be wonderful! (I know his coffin had a glass window. If you attended his funeral and have a photo of him in the coffin, that cannot be uploaded here as this website won't allow postmortem photos.)

An example of photos used with permission: I read about 2 tombs the lie side by side in an intersection in Jamaica and made memorials for them. Since I couldn't find any photo volunteers in Jamaica, I contacted the Jamaica National Heritage Trust for permission to use a photo I saw on their website. Not only did they give me permission, but they sent two even better photo files:

I've seen no tokens left that are questionable in any way. To the contrary, they have all been sincere and heartfelt. I've been watching them for fear that they would be abused by certain factions. (Sometimes the token function has to be turned off on a F.A.G. memorial when that happens.) But, so far, no problem.

Has somebody threatened to ban you from F.A.G.? You just joined! All I asked was that you and Anne-Marie remove any photos that you don't have the legal right to use. Had you not replied, I would have asked an administrator to remove the photo, not that you be banned in any way. We all make mistakes now and then. When you uploaded the photo, the window stated: "General photo guidelines: Only post photos for which you hold the copyright (meaning photos you took)!".

It's true that Americans are the majority members here at present, but it seems like more and more non-Americans are contributing, which is a very good thing, indeed.

Thanks for your help, J

David Kato image

I see that you've uploaded a photo of David Kato. If it's here legitimately, I'm grateful. However, your caption lacks pertinent information. There's no date, no location, and most importantly of all, no credit for the image. Is this image one you took of the man yourself? You should say so. If not taken by you, is the image one that the copyright holder has granted you permission to use? If so, you should say so. Otherwise, it's in violation of US copyright law and must come down. It wasn't here the last time I checked, so it's been a fairly recent upload.

Like I said, if it's here legitimately, I'm thrilled! IF it IS legitimate, would the copyright holder consent to it's use on Kato's WP page? They will have to file their permission with the WP Foundation, but I don't think the process is too onerous.
