I saw that one of the people I was photographing for had a name on her page that was familiar, and when I looked at their pages, I saw that they are my children's great grandparents! Very surprised no stone for him myself as his wives died before him and their stones are there....
Also the fact that he was a Deacon surprises me that his stone was not taken better care of if that is his stone....
Need any pics of any of the other family member stones ?????
Pink Cemetery is about 5 miles from me so no problem taking some....

I added a picture to both Margaret and Samuel, with this caption:
The unmarked grave of Margaret Sloan lies in the space to the right of the flat stone in the middle of the picture.
Ditto for Samuel.
I had the admin office confirm the location.

I went by there this week. The area is a large public plot (which means that the Greenwod online mapping service has it only as a blank space). No problem though. I just have to stop by the admin office and get a more detailed blueprint for the area. Under separate cover, I am sending you a scan of an old map of Green-Wood. Section D was called "Hill of Graves". That name has disappeared from current maps.
I think this was one of the public burial sites. Most of these appear empty because people couldn't afford headstones (I assume).

By the way, it was fortunate that the Sloan lot had a stone, let alone a legible one. As you can see from the wide view, almost the entire hill is devoid of markers. Yet the hill is almost completely filled with graves.Added by Michael Towers on Jan 23, 2012 4:01 PM | |
