Happy I could help. I'd requested someone else's obituary from my local library's archives, which includes old newspapers. When they sent me the obit I requested, Mr. Powell's obituary was on the same page. The older obits are hard to come by these days, so glad I could help.

|Ron Roberson||RE: Your kindess and Richard's Unmarked Grave|
You're welcome, Joyce. When I saw your request it was clear that Richard had been a dear friend of yours, so I was very sad to find that his grave was unmarked. Sorry I couldn't do more...but I hope that sometime you will be able to visit his last resting place.

Thank you so much Joyce. Rutland would be one of the right names - my grandmother was a Hamilton by birth but her mother was a Rutland. It's a real mystery because the Hamilton's were a large family but seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth. I've spoken with several old timers in the area and no one can recall ever hearing of them though they show up in census records through 1920.
My cousin and I are visiting soon and plan to take a couple of days surveying the site.
Thanks again for the input and I'm glad you were able to find your great great grandmothers resting place.

Joyce, thanks so much for the reply. On my grandmothers death certificate it was noted that she was buried in the Cherokee "Colored" Cemetery. From what I've been able to discern, it was the designated cemetery for African American burials during a certain period of time in Cherokee. My grandmothers name is Emily "Butter" Hamilton and the list I asked about was the one on the website. From what I've been able to put together her husband worked for TVA and would have had the means to provide a headstone. I also think that her family would have seen to it that her grave was marked. Since Rutland's (possibly her maternal side) are buried there I do know that Rutland's are still in the area but the Hamilton's have vanished. On my trip last year I met with people who have lived in the area since the 30's and they had no recollection of the Hamilton's. I have since traced some of them in Kentucky.
Any info you have is appreciated. We will be visiting the area soon and hope to be able to update the survey.
Were you able to locate your great great grandmothers burial site?

I see where you surveyed a particular cemetery in Cherokee Alabama. You stated that it had long been abandoned and neglected. I think this cemetery was known as the Cherokee "Colored" Cemetery years ago.
I had tried visiting it last year during the summer but the weeds and overgrowth were unreal; however, we made our approach from the top side behind the high school and don't recall seeing any of the graves you found. Did you make your approach from below - off of Main St.? Do you think you identified all the graves located there? I have tracked my maternal grandmother to this cemetery and noticed she wasn't on the list of graves.

Hi Joyce, I deleted the duplicate memorial and I apologize for adding it. I was fairly new at F-A-G then and have since then learned to not just check for a name at a specific cemetery, but to do a name search for all of Find A Grave.
As for the duplicate cemetery, tha other cemetery has the same name, but it was either in another town or another county ( I think). I meant to refer back to it before deleting it for the location, but forgot to do so. I added your aunt to the one I did because the name of the location of the cemetery that was mentioned in her obituary. I am not familiar with the area, so I may be be wrong about this. If it is a duplicate cemetery the best thing to do is contact Find A Grave and ask them for a suggestion. Wish I could be of more help.

No, I had actually forgot about it. I will ask mother and see if she knows. Aunt Rosie passed away a few weeks ago, if I would have thought I'm sure some of the family at was at the funeral would have known.....I will see what I can find out and get back with you.
