RE: Coldbrook
Yes, Unfortunately I left Savannah 38 yrs ago. I live in Hollywood Fl. I will be in Savannah however in August. The grave you found was the grave of one of the Slaves. there were two, one infant one little girl. We always thought that since Philip Ulmer, ( my ggg grandfather) actually placed stones at their graves he may well have been their father. Philip Ulmer also died in 1856..his daughter Mary Deseverger also buried at Coldbrook , died in 1857. His daughter Eliza died about the same time she was 9 yrs old. there were several buried at Coldbrook about the same time, there may have been a contaigous outbreak, yellow fever or thypoid? when I was young there were still about 9 headstones still there...my mother says she remembers when there were about 15...names I remember there were Philip Ulmer, Charles Ulmer, Eliza Ulmer, Mary Elizabeth Desverger, Jane Ulmer,William Ulmer, ...my mind forgets...I hope you have success when you go back...keep me informed..thanks so much for all you do.

RE: Coldbrook
David,
I grew up visiting the plantation, as it was my mothers family. I remember when the headstones in the family cemetary were still there. I had a halloween party there in Oct 1972. We had fun...lol.. the headstones were unfortunately stolen from the cemetary one night in the early 80's before Mrs Cooler, the caretaker left.
there was a few graves also located behind a slave cabin that was still standing at the time ( when I was about 14 it was still there)...one of the graves was 1856. it was a little girl...when the plantation house was being moved and the land being subdivided my mother contacted the desendents of the little slave girl to alert them that the grave was in danger of also being vandilized and lost. But they did not take any action. did you get a photo of the headstone you saw? could I see it?
The Ulmer family cemetary, was about 35 to 50 yards, West South West of the bottom step of the front porch of the house. ....

Not the REAL Coldbrook Cemetary
This Cemetary was the Kessler Cemetary in Rincon on Goshen Rd. This Cemetary is located at the back of a subdivision built in the 1990s named after a former old plantation of the same name...but this is NOT on Coldbrook Plantation and it us NOT the family plantation Cemetary , the REAL COLDBROOK CEMETARY. The Ulmer and Keller family are the ONLY people buried in the REAL Coldbrook Cemetary at Coldbrook Plantation !!!!! I know because I am a part of the Ulmer family!!! The real Coldbrook plantation is at the end of Keller Rd in CHATHAM County...MILES AWAY from this Kessler Cemetary located at the back of the Coldbrook Subdivision in Rincon in EFFINGHAM COUNTY !!!!! Get YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!

Tracy Anne
Sawdey in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon Canada
Hi David:

I just wanted to let you know that a proper marker has now been placed on Gordon & Millie Sawdey's grave in Saskatoon. I deleted the photo I took earlier in the spring and uploaded a new photo of the actual memorial marker to each of their pages (see Find A Grave Memorial# 120208105). I think this photo looks better.

Cheers,

Tracy

I had walked past that stone many times. The light has a lot to do with it. I met the new sexton June 22, 2014. Says he has been there 2 yrs. I don't remember him from last year. Dave Davis was the guy before. He was always very helpfull. Glad I could finally get the picture.

Regarding the above cemetery, our records indicate that the only stones there are fieldstones, although some reportedly have rude initials carved into them. No names or dates. Since I haven't been there, I'll go out tomorrow but don't hold much hope. Such old cemeteries abound here and plain fieldstone graves are very common.

Elizabeth Sawdy
I believe you want me to add Elizabeth as a child of Curtise Sawdy as per the 1850 census. All Curtise' kids are "calculated" on his page and I do not see a place to add Elizabeth. To get her there, she needs to have a memorial on Find A Grave and Curtise listed as her father.-----that's my guess. I'd be glad to help if I could.

I removed my picture of the location that the cemetery records stated she was buried at. I wonder how "many many moons" ago it was put there. I was there 6 years ago and took many many pictures of headstones in that cemetery but, alas, I could not find it.

RE: Charles Fay Sawdey
BTW my personal opinion is he is in the plot of his first wife, and either listed under their name or on the back of the plot card. But then what do I know?

RE: Charles Fay Sawdey
look it up in the Red Bank Register which is online at the Middletown NJ Public Library website.

With many of the old burials the records at Mount Olivet are extremely bad, mispelled, misfiled and totally lost. They also are very lax with look-ups. I have taken them pictures of the stone in plots of the the older ones, and the answer is "what do you expect ? All those acres and the lousy handwriting. Nice that you found it" This is an EXACT quote. Once a woman told me that the groundhogs dug up the area and the stone must have sunk beneath the ground. She was surprised to see the stone's picture. I keep very careful records of my family there. They buried one family member and listed the person on the wrong side of the plot card and told my cousin the person couldn't be there, the plot showed up as empty.
