this and that
Karen Sipe's comments are quite mild compared to some of the rants I've seen on people's Bio pages through the years. I used to browse the Forums regularly, but quit doing that after it got to be just more of the same. Plus after Find A Grave was sold to Ancestry they decided to moderate a few of the Forums, which seemed completely unnecessary.

There are threads which can be followed in the Forums, on a wide variety of topics, Find A Grave-related and otherwise. (It will be interesting to see if Find A Grave gets replace by something else here...it always did in the Forums...and there was another term that got replaced, too, but I can't think of it now.) As for following this discussion of ours, people could go back and forth between our Bio pages--but after a few days when newer messages push these to previous pages, nobody will likely ever see it, and they sure can't search for it.

more about names
Thanks for all the info. As to your question about hyphens, I guess I wasn't specific enough. They are not proper except in last names when the person's legal name is hyphenated.

And again, I do understand quite well the thing about searches. I think the reason Find A Grave doesn't provide for AKAs is because it is a Graves Registration website, meant to catalog the final disposition of people's remains. Everything else is "icing on the cake."

Since, as you mentioned, a search will only find the first name of multiple or hyphenated names, what should be entered in the Surname field is what is on the cemetery marker, if there is one. If there isn't a marker, then it should be the person's legal last name at the time of death.

In cases where two surnames are on the marker, it's often not possible to tell if the one not matching the husband's is a maiden name or another married name, although the death dates usually make that clear.

Whichever name is used, it is always possible that someone will add a duplicate using the other one--however, that should be less likely when the legal surname is used.

What you had inscribed on your parents' headstone is excellent! I've considered having some brass placques made to be bolted to several old stones, showing more of the family relationships. It would be great if there were more people in every family who were interested in making that sort of information more accessible.

I think that those who do become interested in their family histories will find family members, no matter how the names are listed. I think Find A Grave is great because all you need is a name. Thousands of cemetery lists are on the Internet, but if you don't know which one a relative is in, they can't be found just using the name. It's great that you're thinking of ways to make people even easier to find in the future.

names on Find A Grave
I understand the importance of trying to make it more easy to find women in searches--but when all the family gets linked together descendants won't need to search for various great-grand-aunts (or whatever) individually. They can just follow the links, then read the details of any multiple marriages in the person's Bio.

For women with multiple married names I think it would be helpful for Find A Grave to institute an AKA option, similar to what exists for cemeteries. Many cemeteries are listed under multiple names, yet still have only one page.

To my eyes (but, I realize, perhaps not to everyone's) it's a glaring error to see two (or more) names in the maiden name field, or two (or more) last names after a maiden name (unless hyphenated)--it makes it appear as if the person who entered the name didn't understand the meaning of maiden name or surname.

I don't browse Find A Grave searching for such things to correct--although there are a fair number of Contributors who do--but when I come across them in the course of adding Bios or other info that people send, I do often suggest such corrections. After I do, I don't keep track of what I sent, nor do I try to follow up to see that they got done.

The exceptions are for duplicates. Those I keep track of and eventually send to edit@findagrave.com for them to deal with. And that's the main purpose for the naming conventions that Find A Grave has instituted--to avoid duplicates.

If you need more room for personal photos, let me know and I can remove one or two of those I added--or you can send an e-mail to photo@findagrave.com and they should remove the old photo posted by Jim Harrison.

Alternately, as you may or may not know, you can Sponsor the memorial for five bucks--I've done that with a few of my ancestors. Ads are permanently removed, and up to 20 pictures can be added.

I started working on getting photos for the remaining 20% of people in our local cemetery last September, and didn't quite get done before the snow covered the flat markers. I didn't expect to be able to get started on the remaining 4% this early either, and hadn't really planned on checking for any Photo Requests until next month, probably. I'm glad I could get to them sooner.

RE: Photo for First James River Norsk Lutheran Cemetery
Thank you Del, I appreciate your kind words. While I do understand why Find A Grave requires photos submitted show an entrance, memorial or some kind on marker for the actual cemetery we all know that is not always possible. In this case, sadly the cemetery and final resting place of some has been returned to farm land. Since the goal here is to document and preserve the common sense answer to be applied in a case such as this one would be to do just what you did. My opinion, the photo you presented is very appropriate for the situation.
Take care,
Cindy

RE: Clark, Mattie--White Deer
So sorry to hear about your Mom but know that she had a wonderful life with you as a son. Amarillo is in the 70-80s after a MOST miserable summer. Got a 1/2" rain Sat. night--that will help with our total of 2-1/2" since Jan. Usually have about 18-20. Might want to come back before the winter arrives up there.

James River Cemetery/Nikolai Larson
I see you are the manager of his memorial. Please add the following information.
My great grandfather (Jul Stephen Olsberg)left written history in 1942 stating that Nikolai Larson drowned in the Jim River and is buried next to Lars Olsberg (my GG-grandfather). That means he drowned some time after 1878. I hope you will post what I have left here. I feel information like this is priceless because it is so seldom left behind or found. Please reply. Thanks, Corey Olsberg.

RE: Photos of Emmet & Martha Olson Headstones (SD, In the Winter)
I will retake them in the spring as I like a non-snowy picture better. Your requests for Bonander's will take a bit longer as there is still too much snow in that cemetery. I did locate the family marker but not the name markers. Paul
