Pfc William E. Corkern
Pfc William E. Corkern was a soldier of Battery D 105 Coastal Artillery Corps. During D-Day of operation Husky he was on board of the Landing Ship Tank, LST 313. The ship was part of he invasion fleet making amphibious landings at Gela in Sicily. D-Day was 10 July 1943. Suddenly the fleet was attacked and enemy bombers scored a direct hit on LST 313. The deck of the LST was loaded with vehicles and ammunition. A huge explosion occurred killed Pfc Corkern and many others.
After his death he was buried in the temporary American cemetery GELA on Sicily. He was buried in plot-grave C-29-348, date of burial was 25 July 1943.

I am writing a book about this temporary GELA Cemetery, where over 1200 young American men and women have been buried between 1943 and 1947. You took a picture of his grave and I would like to ask your permission to use the picture you took in my book, of course you will be credited.

If you are related and/or may have his picture of documentation abut his death, hope you are willing to share.

thank you
