RE: Anna M. Smith

I wanted to let you know that I took photos of Laura Smith and John Smith, which were right next to Anna Smith. They had the same headstone design.

Peter Eull
There is another marriage of Peter Eull to Margaretha Thull that took place on 15 Oct 1854, recorded in the Grafton, Ozaukee, Wisconsin church records, but also in the place you mentioned. Perhaps they performed the ceremony twice?

RE: George Pierce - West Laurel Hill Cemetery
According to the burial records, he was buried on August 19, 1919. I found a death certificate for George C Pierce, son of Joe & Abigail (Millhouse) Pierce. It shows his birth date as 14 June 1847, death as 14 August 1919.

If this is your George, I'd be happy to send a copy of the death certificate to you. My email address is on my profile page. Just drop me a note.

As an update on the two Backus infants, I have found in a survey of surviving legible gravestones (, the one for their mother...which was transcribed as reading something like "Mary Ann / wife of Orrin Backus / died Nov 19, 1870 / aged 42 years 7 months".

She, and both infants, were all listed in the interment records as being buried in Lot 8 of Section W...but the plot map of that lot shows no sign of them...and the gravestone for her was found in a completely different location, Section M, in that survey.

Unfortunately, finding her gravestone to photograph (and to check the plot map for other family) either by looking throuhg the plot maps or going out into the field would be very tedious because M is a big section. (Plot maps are available here: if you want to look through Section M for it.)

But, hopefully, this information will help you decide how relevant these people are to you.

Re: Photo requests for Backus's at Mt Hope
I've been investigating these three people but am not optimistic about being able to find gravestones for any of them. However, I thought it might be useful to you to have more information about them from the Mt Hope Interment Records.

The two memorials labeled just with the last name "Backus" (1859 and 1860) were both created from entries in the Mt Hope interment records ( that read "Orrin [or Oren] Backus' child". One died at 4 days old and the other was stillborn.

Edward Backus (1890) died of pneumonia at the age of 56 (

RE: Jesse Case memorial photo
No problem, like to see families connected on here. I guess I took credit where if wasn't due, I took a picture of Mary Wheelock's, but someone else had already posted one. I did ask Nathan to link her to her husbands though.

RE: Norman Torrance marker photo
Glad to be of assistance. This was my first trip to Norton Cemetery. The cemetery is divided into partitions separated by either paved or dirt roads. I only had time to look in the partition where the older gravestones were located. Found about 8 requests and the gravestone and footstones of one of my wife's great-great grandparents. Will go back someday and try to fulfill some of the requests in the other partitions.

RE: Jesse Case memorial photo
You are very welcome, happy to help. I have also added photographs to his wifes' memorials, and request a links, Emily (Hubbard) Case, Memorial# 15739847 and Mary C. (Hubbard) Wheeler, Memorial# 15742002.

Also buried on the same lot is Frank Case Memorial# 15739849, who is the son of Emily & Jesse. I've added pictures to his memorial as well.

I have also requested that Nathan link Jesse to his parents (your memorials), and his other son Fred Worden Case, and daughter Eva (Case) Brown (formerly Wright).

Recommended corrections
Thanks for the corrections. These are details that "Old Gravestones of Ulster County" could never have known! You time spent reviewing these memorials is appreciated; especially since this is one of the oldest and most historic graveyards in the country (As are most of those in Ulster County, NY).

Rhodes Family
Peter Rhodes memorial is linked to his parent's as you requested.

Do you have anything on the family of George Lincoln Rhodes and Sarah Eva Higley? I believe that their daughter Edith married Seth Cook.

Hello, just wondering if you have any information on the marriage between Alden Hewitt 1790-1856 and Candace or Candis (Hays) Hewitt 1790-1851. Anything would greatly be appreciated or recommending a genealogist for St Albans area. These are my direct ancestors. Thank you.

B.J. Waters
Alfred G. Smith
Hello. I claimed your photo request but this is going to be tough one. First of all, the cemetery staff told me he is not buried there. The earliest burial they have for an Alfred Smith is 1925. According to the cemetery record, there are no Smiths buried in the plot that is indicated on Alfred's memorial. Second, the person who created this memorial seems to be inactive and is impossible to get a hold of. She copied a transcription from the internet to post memorials on this site, and most of the locations have proven to be incorrect.

I suggest that you contact the cemetery yourself and see if anyone tells you anything different. Please let me know within a few days if you have any new information.

made additions to memorial per your info - just happened to notice his mother was buried Swan Cemetery, Indiana, while you had him born Swan Creek, Ohio - rather odd?? There was no Swan Creek listed, but was a Swanton, so put that but also a note about Swan Creek.
