Harriett Maude Overton Fate
Hi Steve,
I gather that Harriett was the daughter of Francis and Susan Overton of Moon Hill just north of Bernadotte? On 19 Sept 1860 a slave catcher named Boyd was on the trail of 15 escaped slaves. The UGRR had moved them through McDonough County into Fulton, Hiram Starr Thomas of Vermont, IL hiding them. There was a knife fight between Boyd and Francis at the Overton cabin. Boyd broke away and rode for the Bernadotte bridge where the slaves were hiding. Harriett mounted a horse and carrying a rifle thundered off in pursuit. The slave hunter was shot dead on the bridge, but no one knows who killed him...
I'll go over to Bernadotte and see if I can find her grave and take photo of same.
