RE: Ellis Cemetery, St Lawrence, NY
Yes, the 1981 handwritten inventory recorded those words from the stones. There is no cemetery office and I have no idea if there are any actual cemetery records from those old burials. It would be quite unusual for that the county if there were. Even deaths weren't recorded by the county until the 1880's. I also have no clue whether there was any "funeral home" in use back in the 1840's. Usually the family just went to a furniture maker for a casket or made their own.

The cemetery page can be found here:

Anyways, just leave the requests open. There is one cemetery in that area I wanted to do this summer so I might be able to swing by. At only 200 graves, it would be pretty easy to look through and from the photos on the page above, it seems to be fairly well cared for.

FYI - It looks like the markers were found back in a 1981 inventory, but 19 years later when the next inventory was done in 2000, they were not able to be located. That might be why your request hasn't been filled. I do know there are at least a couple folks who generally fill requests in that area if there are markers found.

RE: Ellis Cemetery, St Lawrence, NY
Not sure when I can get up to Ellis in Stockholm. I pick a cemetery at a time to do a full inventory of when I can find reasonably priced hotel rooms and get time off work. I just finished St. Joseph's in Madrid a couple weeks ago and am part way through Crary Mills now. I am in NY in the summers, but its still more than 2 hours each way to Stockholm and most of St. Lawrence county, so that usually means finding hotels, etc. I'll see what I can do, but no promises. I'll do some checking around to see if I can figure out if they would even have markers. That old, its pretty doubtful and I'd hate to waste a full day making a round trip up that way if there are no markers.

Hi Mariette,

Maybe you can help me clear up something. I found I had that picture attached to an Ella Elizabeth Pfingsten Mennis, however, the dates were wrong. Do you know about any Ella Elizabeth Pfingsten?

RE: Hiland's at Evergreen Cemetery
Marralene- when we were at Evergreen Cemetery we came accross other Hilands and took pics of the stones we saw: Jackson & Juliet, and 2 babies (1857 & 1864). Quite a few of the markers are very hard to read. I would guess that your 4 new photo requests are for hard to read stones. The next time we are at Evergreen, probably next week, we will search for Joseph, Hannah, Isabel, and Basil.

RE: Amanda Tharp
It sounds like Hilltop is a mess.

How do you do documenting if the cemetery office has few records?

RE: Amanda Tharp
Hi, Marralene,
I just made a memorial for Amanda. It is #108683738. I very much appreciate your taking a picture of the plot and visiting the funeral home. Did they say who else was buried in Plot 24? Charles and Amanda had five children, and I have not been able to locate any of their children's graves. Their daughter, Maude, and her husband Victor Runnels, also died in Polk County. Folks buried without tombstones are usually not included in lists of those in a particular cemetery.

Thanks again,

RE: Sampson headstone pix
That's the very first "Woo-Woo" for me! Must mean you are pleased, which makes me glad as well. You are very welcome for the photos. That marker is under shade until midmorning. It is on a sort of raised flat (couldn't really call it a hill) and the water does not pool there. It's in the front of the cemetery, next to the main office but still 100 yards from the street. cb

RE: Amanda Thrap
I did find a listing for Amanda in the Oregon Death Index.
Name: Amanda M Thorp
Death Date: 9 Apr 1925
Death Place: Polk
Certificate: 51

The state archives will let a person take a digital photo of a death certificate. I know someone who has done that. I will ask her if she can get this one. It might say where she was buried.

RE: Charles Nelson Tharp
Marralene, thanks for the email address for Andrew at the mortuary. I will contact him. I have used Oregon's historical records index and have a copy of Charles' estate records. No listing for Amanda, unfortunately.

Thanks for your help,

RE: Charles Nelson Tharp
Marralene, you are being a good detective. Amanda M Tharp is the name of Charles' second wife. So it is likely that they were buried together. You are saying that the mortuary has a record that she was buried there, but there is no stone for either of them, right?

Yes, it would be very kind of you to take a photo of the grave without a stone. Would you also be able to send me the mortuary record for Amanda?

Thank you so very much,

Uncle Mac's mother
I just realized that the link to Uncle Vincent's mother is not here. The No is 98591011. Slowly getting the whole family memorialized. I did realize that Margaret is here/on her headstone as McLaughlin, she actually married again in the 1940's or so I was told. I have been unable to find the marriage record for this marriage but her death certificate is under her married name from her 2nd marriage. I also hold the deed to the cemetery plot and he is buried there also but not on the headstone...Interesting...
