You are very welcome. I'm out there every now and then, so I'll keep my eye out for a permanent marker. Sometimes it takes awhile. :)

|Sandra Camille High||State Hospital burial|
My gg grandmother, Adeline Watson, died at the state hospital. Was given dates only of admittance and death.....1879 - 1904 wife of Samuel N ...buried on the grounds. They were supposed to have been moved to another location for more buildings on the grounds but it is believed they never moved them but are in the yard of one of the dorms at the prison. I believe my grandmother suffered post partem depression after child birth because in the 1880 census a baby is shown in the hh with his dad and remarks were that his the mother was insane. Checking all census records during her stay there before death she was listed as a servant but to the far right it stated INSANE. Is there anyway to get more info on her and the cemetery where she was buried.... also to have the cemetery listed in Find A Grave? After this many years, it would seem that would no longer be such private information.
Thank you for an answer

My grandmother's first cousin had a stroke in the 1940's. He was a STRONG man and his wife could "handle him". He would fight her, couldn't talk well, get angry fast but could walk and hit his care givers. Since his other cousin was the sheriff of JAX at the time, arrangements were made to admit him to the state hospital. His wife continued to get his railroad pension as the state had committed him against his will....this is well-documented. I think he lived about 6 months there and died after having another massive stroke. His wife divorced him and was remarried about the time of his death. He was buried there but after the wife was no longer his next of kin, his adult children from his first marriage went there, got the body and re interred it next to their mother who had died shortly after childbirth some 20 years earlier.
In today's world, he would not have been admitted to a state mental hospital as he would not met the criteria of being mentally ill.
What I am saying is not every one that was in a state hospital was mentally ill during early years. Alcoholics, senile old people and head injuries...a distant cousin who had a stroke... and others were placed there in that that time period.
I retired from the State of FL in 2001 and my last position was the RN evening supervisor at the NE Florida State Hospital. I have seen things from the other side.

More on the subject:
Another member found this, which is very interesting, and I am sharing.
I found an incredibly interesting study/preservation project (www.chicora.org/pdfs/RC537%20Final%20optimized.pdf) that talks about the confusing history of the hospital/cemeteries and efforts to document the burials (from tracking documentation to ground penetrating radar). There are aerial photos of the cemeteries (with grids) and they appear to be physically separated. There are also two appendices that contain names of all documented burials (including cemeteries 2 and 4). Perhaps this document chould be a base line for a division

Strange - I did not post the picture to her memorial. I'm not related or connected to her in any way. You are welcome to remove the picture if you wish - or if you can't let me know and I will see if I can. That is a picture I took of the cemetery when my husband and I placed flowers on his brother's grave. The picture was posted as a cemetery picture on the cemetery's main page. I have other pictures as well but I really can't tell you which cemetery it is. It was the only one we knew about when we went there in about 1983 to locate his grave and install a proper headstone. I now know there are several cemeteries, but not then. He was buried in 1941 so it is probably the newest cemetery. It is very well maintained even though it is hard to locate without directions from the hospital. I think the old cemeteries are located somewhere along the dirt road on the way to the newer one.

Hi there, I was not fortunate enough to find John, like the previous message that cemetery is extremely difficult to find loved ones. No plot or section numbers. I will go back out there when I get a chance and try again or if you call and message me I can sent my friend to get it for you.

If you will call the cemetery office at 404-755-6611 and request the section and lot numbers, I will go and try to find your loved one. They want to charge me for the information. The cemetery is massive and it would narrow it down for me. Thanks.

Your very welcome. Your probably asking yourself why only a close up? My camera battery died as I found Alexander so I used my cell phone and for whatever reason that was the only picture that came out. I am going to go back to take a few better pictures.

Hi Karen :O)
The other 2 Mintons I have... I believe I took those pics on the same day as the family plot photos, which would mean they were close by. Let me know what you find out.
And if I can find some of your family in Garden of Memories... hmmm, perhaps I will go to the office and LIE!! Tell them I'm a granddaughter or something... maybe they will help me then..??? I'll see what I can do! ...if you could send me some names?? my email is email@example.com. My husband has promised to take me graving the first weekend he is off work which will be in 2 weeks. :O)

He is exactly where you said. East side of Cycadia, near the fence. I just took a different long view, as cars were lined up by the fence. He is in Section I. I did verify with the caretaker. I threw the sheet away with his precise plot location. My friend, Linda Flowers, has worked extensively there. She has his plot listed at her website. 3rd name down.
It's funny, as I am documenting I come across alot markers with just initials. Usually a footstone. John's stuck in my noggin because it didn't really match up with any one else, as I thought it may be a footstone for a headstone that had sunk.

|Janet McCrary||RE: transfer|
James M. is now transferred! :O) I also have a Jesse Minton (1881-1975) and a John T. Minton (1842-1925), both buried at Myrtle Hill. If they're 'your people', let me know.
Ahh, now I understand about Leonard being laid to rest where he is.. Lovely story. :O)
'Garden of Memories', unfortunately, is NOT 'graver friendly'! The office refuses to help!! ...and to walk the cemetery actually looking for someone is tough, since most (if not all!) the stones are the flat ones on the ground... Not the standing ones. And the cemetery is enormous!!
When I get back to Myrtle Hill, I want to try to get better pics of your Mintons!! I got a new camera (finally!) and know it will get the job done!
So sorry to hear about your father. Lost mine last year... But more emotional for me was losing my Mom in 1990, age 52, lung cancer. So I understand your heartache...
Take care!! Hope you have a Merry Christmas too!!
(ps. adding you as a friend here on Find)

I'm glad I could help you find Luther and Michael and Michael.
I think I have seen Thankful Moses, but I'm not sure where. I checked my photo file from Old Wintonbury Cemetery and I didn't see her and I also checked some records that list those interred there without finding her listed on Old Wintonbury Cemetery. I'll keep looking.

Hello! I took pictures in Mount Zion Cemetery, and there was a posting for the location of all the burials in the cemetery, but neither Adeline nor Linnie Williams were listed. I posted a picture of that section of the listings. Sorry!

Karen are you sure about his name. . The reason I ask is b/c all the infants named Harrell buried in this cemetery were noted to be infants of Mary Jane and S. M. Harrell. . Could the "M" possibly have been meant to be a "W" ? . . Please advise and I will change it, just want to be sure. Thanks
You have this memorial listed as Samuel M. Harrell.It should be William Samuel Harrell.
