James/Schrock Cemetery - Portage
Portage Community Historical Society, Inc.
General meeting
Wednesday April 16, 2014, will be held at 7:00 pm at Woodland Park
Public welcome
Our guest speaker will be Brendan Clancy, Portage Twp. Trustee, who will speak on the township cemeteries. He will tell us about the improvements and changes at the James/ Schrock cemetery where some if our earliest settlers are buried.

Brendan Clancy announced at his State of the Township address at the Bonner Senior Center on Feb. 13, 2014: Improvements to James-Schrock Cemetery - A steep incline at the main entrance has prohibited access to many visitors. We are currently under construction of a new entrance into James/Schrock Cemetery. As soon as the weather cooperates we will continue with this project. Also, a new James-Schrock memorial monument will be installed at McCool Cemetery. This monument will list the names of the deceased at James-Schrock Cemetery. A dedication ceremony is being planned.

Please come out and learn what our trustee is doing. Refreshments will be served. For more information check our page at or call the museum at 219-762-8349.

Infor on cole
Hi Sandy my name is Tammi, I am the grand daughter of Mary Cole Large, I have found this to be so interesting finding out info on my family. So Vada cole would be my great grandmother, I was living with my gm Mary in Kentucky up on College Heights when Vada passed away. We had her funeral in the home I remember it as it was yesterday. I remember standing on a bucket to see her. She was dressed in pink it was so pretty. I remember going out side and catching fire flys to put in a jar, so her soul could see the way to heaven, interesting how things stay with us.Please contact me at
My father was Hager Larger, I can remember when gf Caleb died, I remember crossing a swinging bridge was young of course but there are things that just stay with ya

RE: William Bartell
I'm not sure I answered your letter but if I did please disregard. William Bartell in Colorado Springs, CO is a brother to George Bartell also of Manitou Springs, CO. Their father was Henry who died in OK. Their mother, Margaret Jane Howe Bartel/Bartell (later married twice more and is buried in Boulder CO), called her children Willie and Georgie (others were Josie, Lizzie, etc). I do not have pictures of Henry their father. We have a picture of his gravestone in OK. Margaret Jane and Henry divorced abt 1880.

RE: William Bartell
I'm a bit confused about your Williams and Henrys. George Bartell is a brother to my g grandmother Cora Bartell Jones. William (I think this is the one you refer to) is another sibling to Cora and George and there are others. Their father was Henry (brother to the Bartell men in IL). We do not have a picture of this Henry the father - only the tombstone picture.

William Bartell
Hello. I too am a descendent of William Bartell and wanted to know if you have any photos of his father George or his Grandfather Henry Bartell?
Thank you for any help you can give. I am Henry's brother's (John P. Bartell) great grt grandaughter

RE: Rogers Transfers
It helps when asking for the transfers, that you include the number of the memorials. More than happy to transfer - also figured the other two were related somewhere in the line.

What documentation do you have for Allen Wise & Jonathan Wise being buried in McCool? Are they in unmarked graves? I am trying to maintain the database for the Portage Cemeteries and don't have them listed.

Found them, I'd forgotten they were not buried in Portage.

RE: Cole - Allen Families
Sandy, I'm not sure if I am related or not probably. Delila Allen is my gg grandmother, she married 1 Johnson Joseph and 2 Pearl Mann, her daughter Bertha Joseph is my g grandmother. Bertha married Charles Howard, their daughter, Jessie is my grandmother, married Joe Joseph so through the 2 of them I am related to most of the Joseph and Howards in KY. Charles Howard's grandmother is Malissa Cole, daughter of John Cole.

Are you related? The one thing I wish Ancestry would get is a relationship finder, it would make life easier for me (grin).

RE: - Allen JAMES stone - findagrave
Yes, I mean there is nothing left! The cemetery has been horribly vandalized. All that is left is the James stone base, a small kiosk stone which is on the ground, and many pieces of stones. It's so sad that the memorials of early pioneers of the area have been destroyed. Please look at the cemetery page. There is a beautiful sign that has been made to commerate the memory of these early pioneers. (The woman who had this sign made, has done so much to preserve the history of the community!)

RE: Tanner Tombstone
I went back and tried to take another picture. I used water on it to make the letters show up better.I will try to post it tonight or tomorrow. I can send messages from my old computer at home but need my sisters computer to put photos on the website. We only live 2 miles apart so I am over there a lot. There were other Tanners in the cemetery if you are interest in them I can send you a list of names.
I have lived in Jasper County my whole life and have known some Tanners. My father and brother worked at the Teft Elevator and there was a truck driver that drove many of the semi's there, Ralph Tanner.

Yes, you should call them. They are very helpful there and would probably look it up for you while you were on the phone.

RE: Gravestone - Raymond Frazier
I have taken pictures at Memorial Park and the office people there were very helpful. I still have all the maps they gave me, so if you get the Section and Plot, I could take a picture for you.
