Can you change Maggie's middle initial to F. instead of E.? Or you can just go ahead and add her middle name which was Florence. Thanks! Sharon

Thanks so much for your reply! Here is the story I have on Charles Pettit. My great-grandmother, Lelah Bettis Owen, had my grandfather, Charles Jay Bettis, out of wedlock, so I don't think she ever married Charles Pettit. He is listed as his father, however, in a census that I found. So, back then this was quite a scandal I suppose, and was a "family secret," which no one would speak of. Being a child I shamelessly eavesdropped, and when I started working with Bette Brown of the Augusta cemetery website, discrepancies came up as to my grandfather's year of birth. Lelah had later married this John (Jack) Owen, and changed her son's name to Owen, rather than her maiden name Bettis. She then had another son, Seth, to Owen. Lelah's mother pretty much raised C. Jay.
Back to Charles. Bette questioned me at length after we found Charles Pettit in the census with Lelah, and it came to me that he was murdered by a young woman in Chicago, a Maud Yoder. She found his obituary, which is published on his site at the Augusta site. Wish I had a photo of him or any of them. Do you have any photos of anyone? I have C.Jay's photos and of course Lelah, on the cemetery website.

Hello! I am looking for connections to other Pottorfs. This is what I have: my biological great-great grandparents were Alfred and Martha Jayne Pottorf Pettit. Martha Jayne's parents were Mary Hewitt and Henry Pottorf, were fro the Stark Carroll area I believe. Martha Jaynes grandmother was a Manfull.
Alfred and Martha Jayne's son Charles, my great-grandfather, was murdered at age 25 while in Chicago. He is buried in Augusta.

Hi, I was wondering where you got the information about David's parents. I have hit a brick wall and would love any leads that you can give me. I think you are right about his dad being David, I have found a number of land grant records in his name in the same county as Mary and David were married. Thank you for any help you can give me. Maria

Thanks Alberta! If you don't mind transferring her, that would be great. I'm trying to figure out if her parents truly don't have markers and I'm also researching her siblings, so it would be nice to be able to add/edit as I find more info. Hope all is well with you! Thanks again ~ Anna #47740536

You are right. This is one of the many women in the cemetery record who are listed by maiden rather than married names. The stone is difficult to read and I thought it said "nee Kauffman" as the cemetery record says but it does not. Below her name it says "wife of" and then "____ Kauffman" on the next line. If you have her husband's name I will add it in the bio. I do not know this family and listed it simply because I live near the cemetery.

Hi, I can't remember if we've talked before or not. Are you related to Jacob Worley? The reason I'm asking is he was my 4th great grandfather. You have him buried in Olive Hill Cemetery in Owen Co., Indiana, which I do not dispute. However, I was wondering if you know if he has a headstone? I asked for a photo request of the gravestone but the volunteer who tried to find his grave said she couldn't find it. Any information you could give me would be a great help.
Thanks so much,

The picture you show of Sophia Fricker and John Henry Bottorff is the memorial stone that the Bottorff Assocition erected. Sophia's real headstone is just at the base the the memorial stone. It is a flat stone. John Henry Bottorff is not buried there at Pleasant Grove. His remains were never found.

A friend sent me an electronic image of a letter written in 1878 about the family of Jacob Bottorff (the spelling in the letter). The letter, written by a grand daughter (she did not sign it)mentions that Jacob, his wife Rhoda, and thier children are buried in Shiloh Cemetery. If you are interested in a transcription, please contact me and I will email it to you.
