Hutchings in Atwater Cemetery
I want to thank you so much for locating George and his son's headstones!!! Where in the cemetery did you find them? You better not say the left side as you are looking from the road or else my hubby is in a lot of trouble, LOL!
I came home and looked at Cortland Co. genweb and other info I had to make sure we didn't make a mistake, but everything clearly indicates the father and 3 of his son's are buried there! I would've been pretty disappointed to find there were no stones. I KNEW George Jr. HAD to have a military marker as I have a copy of the application filed to request one and it indicated a bronze marker was shipped to Atwater Cemetery.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!! Just wish we had still been there when you found them...We found the other cemetery, too. :)

Re: Mary Young buried in Chipman cemetery, Cayuga County.
I am curious why you have listed as spouse "Elnathan Close" but the inscription says
"wife of Henry Young". Henry is my ancestor (and DAR Patriot).
Did you get your info from ancestry com? Other?
Or does the tombstone/cemetery mention Elnathan Close?
Been trying to figure out if Henry Young's wife Mary is the same Mary (Moe) who married Elnathan Close or a different Mary that everyone has confused.
I have found no death record for the Mary Moe who married Elnathan Close in Connecticut. Divorced?
Hoping you can shed some light.

Hi Carol,
No problem! I love looking through the old microfilm.
When you list Charles & Emma let me know, I'll link their children to them, and transfer if you like.
Plymouth is well worth a visit, not much changed since Calvin Coolidge lived there. Definitely check it out if you find yourself in that part of the planet.

RE: Prior / Prier
Hi Carol,
Here's what I found. You may or may not have one or more of these, but here you go:

Rutland Daily Herald, Rutland, Vt. April 2, 1901:
Charles Prier died yesterday noon at his home, No. 7 North Main street, aged 73 years, 2 months and 22 days. His death was due to organic trouble of the heart, and he had been in poor health for three years. He leaves a wife and one son in this city and another son in Burlington. The funeral will be held at the house Wednesday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock.

Rutland Daily Herald, Rutland, Vt. April 4, 1901:
The funeral of Charles Prier, who died at his home, No. 7 North Main street, Monday, was held at the house yesterday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock. Rev. George Eliot Cooley officiated. The bearers were Frank B. Prier of Burlington and H.M. Prier, Eben Bishop and John Pinlon of this city. The burial was in the old Protestant cemetery on West street.

Rutland Daily Herald, Rutland, Vt., Feb. 27, 1905:
Mrs. Ema Prior died at her home, No. 7 North Main street, at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon after a two weeks' illness with pneumonia, aged 74 years. She leaves two sons, Henry M. and Fred V. Prior, both of this city. The funeral will be held at the house Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Rutland Daily Herald, Rutland, Vt., March 2, 1905:
Relatives and a few friends attended the funeral of Mrs. Emma Prior yesterday afternoon at the house, No. 7 North Main street. Rev. Orin Edson Crooker officiate. The bearers E.H. Wood, W.F. Cook and Edward Bishop of this city and Fayette Graves of Clarendon. Burial was in the old West Street cemetery. Among those from out of town who attended the services were Frank Prior of Burlington and Mrs. R.R. Redmond of Williston.

Found nothing for Harlow, Laura only had a one sentence notice that she'd died.

I think with the above, it is safe to say that Charles and Emma are in unmarked graves in West Street Cemetery. So if you want go ahead and make memorials for them there, just put UNMARKED in the plot field.

Jen :)

RE: Prior / Prier
Hi Carol,
I've never heard any cemetery here called the "Old Protestant Cemetery", interesting!

Knowing what I know about the cemeteries in Rutland, I think West Street Cemetery is a good guess, if for no other reason than that 2 of his children were already there. It is also the biggest of the 4 really old cemeteries in the city - West Street, West Street Catholic, Center Rutland and North Main Street.

It's possible that Charles is buried at West Street. After Evergreen opened (early 1860s) burials there really slowed down, and a lot of graves were moved to Evergreen. I have the records for Evergreen through 1904, and Charles, Harlow and Laura aren't listed. The Prier monument in West Street is one of the bigger monuments there, maybe there was room in the plot for more, but for whatever reason his name was never added. There's also the possibility there was a stone and it was destroyed, or even that the family was removed to Evergreen post-1904 (no stones on Evergreen transcription for them). West Street is in very sad shape, and has been for a very long time...I've read news stories as far back as far as 1858 about that sorry state of it, and I know it's been locked for at least 80 years.

Anyway...I'm headed to the library tomorrow afternoon, and will take along some names to look up in the old Rutland Heralds. Those old papers don't often give a lot of info, but sometimes they surprise me :)

HOORAY!!! I see you found the Wyatts at Cortland. My husband and I dug around there, but must have missed them. That is so wonderful! It is quite a mess over there. I need to see if I can get the guys to bring down those shrubs.
