THAGARD Screven County, Georgia Area

THAGARD/THAGGARD North Carolina to Effingham, Screven, Bulloch and Laurens Counties, Georgia

Dear Miz TRAMMELL,

Thank you for your kind words. While working on the memorial for your great grandmother, I found a brief obituary for your great grandfather. So here is where the "bio" stands now for Valeria Elizabeth LUCAS:

Valeria Elizabeth LUCAS was the first wife of William J. THAGARD (born September 1853 in North Carolina, died 1908). By 1880, William was single and boarding with many other laborers in Georgia Militia District 10 (which lies along the southern border of Effingham County) who were involved in a turpentine business.

Valeria and William were married about 1881, and they were the parents of at least five children, all born in Georgia:
Stephen E. THAGARD (1882-1888)
William E. THAGARD Sr. (1884-1948), who, in 1903 in Laurens County, married Ida Melissa GRINSTEAD,
Frank Grady THAGARD (born 1890),
Robert M. THAGARD (born 1891), and
Sallie Mae THAGGARD (1894-1966), the wife of Early E. WARREN (1883-1964).

Following Valeria's death William married her sister, Arjane Euphrasia LUCAS (1859-1925) about 1895, and they were the parents of one child:
Louise THAGARD (born 1899 in Georgia).

William J. THAGARD (born 1853), was the brother of Alexander C. THAGARD (1855-1912), who married Ella Frances HAGIN of Bulloch County.

Please let me know of your corrections. I temporarily added an image of a sign at the cemetery to aid in your contacting those who care for the cemetery.

Incidentally, Arjane (spelling varies) was the namesake of her Aunt Argane D. LUCAS DALEY (born 1818, died after 1870).

May God Bless You and Your Family, Robert ><>
