There are rumors that many casualties of Exercise "Tiger" when repatriated to the U.S. were not in the coffins. One story tells of a mother insisting the coffin was opened but was refused and told by the military escort that it was "full of rocks".
There are inconsistencies of casualties recovered, numbers transported to the temporary cemetery at Brookwood, England, and inaccurate record keeping of burials. See

Douglas List Lambert
There is a Douglas L Lambert, a Pfc with 557th QM Railhead Company who was killed in action during Exercise "Tiger" on 27/28th April 1944 in the English Channel. Buried initially at Brookwood military cemetery on 1st May 1944.
Is this the same person ?

RE: Photos
I did not get much of a chance to speak with the people in the office out at The Old City Cemetery yesterday as they are preparing for the wreath laying next weekend. I did spend some time up there in the oldest part of the cemetery looking and did not find his marker.

The weather is expected to be wonderful here today, so I shall go out to Presbyterian and search for your ancestors graves there. Your having the general locations of their markers should help a lot!

Reverend James Tompkins
Hello...I read in your memorial that a stone for him was supposed to have been seen less than 10 years ago. Would there be any additional information you could provide as to a possible location of the marker? I go out to The Old City Cemetery frequently and would really like to find his grave as he is listed as the first person buried there. If found, I would certainly take a photograph and post it to your memorial.

RE: Alice Mclaurine Pickett

Andrew Jackson* and Alice T McLaurine Pickett
were grandparents.

Hugh Farrior Pickett, Sr and Annie Elizabeth Hardman Pickett were Andrew Jackson Pickett (1915-1973)'s parents.

My records show that all are buried in the Pickett-McLaurine-Colvin Cem, Shopton, Bullock County, Alabama

* a 'dashing' picture of AJ in Confederate uniform hangs in the Bullock County Courthouse.

I think Maude was his second wife. I found her in the 1930 Census for Blackstone, Nottoway County, VA living with brother-in-law T.L. Powell and sister Etta.

Wondering if you would want to merge your Tompkins with my Thomas-Tompkins in Pike Co..
I have a memorial to Christopher Weeden Thompkins
at that site along with 11 others and photos.
I would delete my memorial and post a picture to yours.
I had found the cemetery listed as Thomas -Tompkins so made the memorials that way. There is also a small Tompkins cemetry on uup the road about a mile.

William Byrd II
Hello fellow grave finder. I was wondering if you might remember when you took the pic of the grave of William Byrd II if it was taken at Westover Plantation or at Westover Parish Church? We visited Westover Plantation today to take pic of William Byrd III and visited the cemetery and did not see anything that looked like the pic you took. The only Byrd buried there was Mary Horsmenden Byrd, wife of William I. Would appreciate any thing you might remember as you took the pictures in June of 2009.

RE: Tompkins in Bedford
I want you to know that I have been privileged to visit the old Tompkins farm in Bedford County, Virginia. It is still beautiful. The graves are about a hundred yards from the house. Inasmuch as you made the nice comment concerning the one lady let me add this. That particular Headen had been married and had a daughter but I don't know her name let alone trying to find her.

As to the good doctor who married Lydia Purcel Headen. He was a pillar in his community. One of his grandsons passed away in Memphis, Tennessee about 1938,
