James & Sarah Brooke (46803353 & 49605164)
Thank you for the photograph that you posted of James Brooke's memorial at Bascomb Methodist Cemetery in Woodstock, GA. I'm writing to ask if you might know if his wife Sarah was listed on any of the sides of the memorial. Looking at the photos, I notice that two sides are photographed and I'm curious if the other sides are blank or not. Do you have any memory of the stone or any way that you might be able to check?

Thank you again for the photograph you took!

RE: Emelda Reeves portrait
Hi Chet,

I just received an email from Allen and he had some questions which I clarified with June. She has been quite ill with laryngitis for several weeks & has been having tests to see why it won't go away.I am quite concerned, as she is a pretty heavy smoker.

I appreciate your help & know Emelda will be in capable hands. I will pay both of you a commission when it is sold. You can talk with Allen & let me know the amount. I paid June $2500 for the painting, but if necessary I will sell it for less.I wish I were in a financial position to give it to the 2 of you to share, but unfortunately, caring for another ill child has made that impossible. You both have devoted so much time & effort to that horrible day. June is ecstatic that you will get involved. It is fine if Allen shares the email with you, & vice-versa. Please let me know what questions you may have. Thanks for your help. Emelda had a lot of love in my home. Thanks - Sonya

Emelda Reeves portrait
Hi Chet,

I hope you remember me. We met with June Johnston at my home where I have the portrait she painted of Emelda Reeves, her best friend who was lost in the Winecoff Fire. I had to remove the painting from my living room wall over the past 2 years. After losing my daughter Nancy, and having my son afflicted with the same illness Nancy had,
I simply could not look at Emelda's face any longer without crying..as it reminded me of 'death'...I have it safely put away & have decided to actively sell it. I have spoken to June about it, and she fully supports & understands my decision. She offered to take it back & give me another piece of her wonderful work. That is doable, however I would rather sell it to someone who would remember the terrible day of the fire & would honor & respect the painting. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please let me know. My telephone number is 706-540-5000.I have a photo of it & I would be happy to send it to you. I would be happy to pay you a commission if you found a buyer.

Thanks for your help. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,
Sonya Swain

Annandales of Marietta
The Annandale family had a personal plot down the road from Oakton in Marietta. My grandfather took me there many times as a child...which was down the road also from the Dickson family home (Georgia Wilder Annandale Dickson). The little family plot set a top a hill overlooking the old highway. St. Mary Lane is near this. A couple of years ago, my mom and I were back in Marietta and went to look at it. To our amazement, it was gone. My mom even has the old deed and plot of the property (small area). Now, a lady's garage sets on top of what was the family cemetery. I knocked on the door. She insisted that is was an area for paupers. She even had a newspaper article about the pauper graves on her wall. True, the hilltop could have had pauper graves as well down from it. However, the wrought iron fence and family grave was there was well.

I was also told by another cousin that SEVERAL years prior, that a grave marker was picked up off the highway/Kennesaw that had fallen down to the road by a friend of theirs. Some how the marker was thrown away or discarded due to not knowing at the time whose or where it came from.

This area was the family plot given to the gardner "Annandale" for the Wilder family at Oakton. If you can dig up any info, please let me know. If so, please email me at laderholt8275@charter.net

Chet,
Donald Jacobus Lines researched all the early families of New Haven, CT from far, far back covering many generations. His book is called Ancient Families of New Haven, Ct. It will be a great source of information for you, already researched. I got my disk quite a while ago from ancestry. Try a Google search. Hope this helps you out.

RE: Annie Torbert
Hi Chet,

I did ask my aunt if she had any info on the Torbert family and she said no. She said they didn't see them much, just at funerals for the most part. She did say that they were all very smart, pretty girls and they were a good family.
Wish I had more info for you. I will of course let you know if and when I should find out anything at all.

Paula
