Mary Jane Watts
Thank you for sending information on Mary Jane. According to her stone, she died in 1862. Calculating from her age and date of death, she was probably born toward the end of 1860. Did I misunderstand your request to add a year of birth of 1862 for her? Thank you.

re: Find A Grave Correction: John Pinnick
Here is a reply to your message from my brother, Ned Benson, who has written several books on Benson/Pinnick and other families:

The dates for John Hamilton Pinnick on the gravestone in Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie, are probably correct (1863-1920) and most likely come from his daughter, Rachel May Pinnick Smith, wife of Ray Smith who ran Smith Funeral Home (in Guthrie), from which just about everybody related to us (Benson/Pinnick/Kongable) has been buried, including most recently David Downing's wife.

The date 1863 is contra the received oral tradition - passed to me by Louise Barritt Kemp, descended from Thomas Volney Pinnick, younger
brother of Malinda Frances and older brother of John Hamilton - that when John Hamilton's poppa Elijah went off to war in 1865, Mary America Hawkins Pinnick was pregnant with John Hamilton.

The problem with the oral tradition is that it does not jive with Elijah's Civil War service record:

Elijah Pinnick was drafted on September 26, 1864, in Evansville, IN, and on Oct. 14, 1864, he was assigned to Co. B of the 25th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers of Evansville. Military records show him present during the period November, 1964, through February, 1865. During March and April he is listed as sick in Raleigh, NC, hospital. He died May 6, 1865, of dysentery in Foster's General Hospital in New Bern, NC, while he was on the way home.

Unless Elijah somehow got leave to go home 9 months before his (John Hamilton) birth on Sept. 20, that is, circa 1 Jan 1865 - unheard of happening during the Civil War and frankly virtually impossible, or he went AWOL - also unlikely since he wasn't shot as a deserter and was honorably discharged - we are left with only one option - that Elijah ain't John Hamilton's biological daddy - and that option has been conclusively ruled out by recent YDNA testing on male descendants of Elijah who are descendants of Thomas Volney Pinnick.

Side note, that's probably where our Grandpa Benson (Voliny Oliny Benson 1881-1950) got his first name, too, though spelled differently.

In my (Ned Benson) Pinnick book, I record both the oral tradition and Elijah's civil war record, but I also used the 1865 birth year. I will correct that in the manuscript, and include the above analysis.

My email address is bobbiejo_3195@yahoo.com if you just want to email me Shirley and I'll send it back in a reply to you. Glad I could help. I don't think it's any of my relation so was hoping I could find someone who would want it.

Estella Brown & Charles Salyer
I found a wedding announcement for Estella & Charles from The Ashland Clipper (Jan. 6, 1927 while researching articles for my family members. I printed it thinking it might be someone in my family. If you don't have it already and would like a copy, let me know and I would be more than happy to email it to you.

RE: Breazeale Names
I'm not sure why you posted this. I just didn't take the time to go back through the names so I could state exactly which they are. I can do that if need be. Right off the top of my head I know that Raymond Breazeale is my 3rd cousin. If necessary I can go back through and figure it out. I went to school with Raymond's brother and his wife was my school teacher. Are these people related to you? If not, is there a problem? I was creating a virtual cemetery yesterday plus I had grandchildren here plus I did some work outside. I haven't lived in Iowa since 1956 but have lots of family buried in the Cedar Creek Cemetery. I guess a large percentage of people buried there are related to me. I grew up in the Cedar Creek Friends Church. Most of the early founders of that church and their descendants are buried in that cemetery. Some also in the Salem Friends Cemetery. I don't like leaving public messages. I prefer corresponding by email. Using email hasn't been a problem for me.

Kilborns at Hampton, NY
Shirley,

Nancy notified me that she had added some photos to my memorials. I had photographed the stones this past summer, but have had a death in my family and am still not finished uploading my photographs. Nevertheless, her message prompted me to do so in this cemetery. So now the Kilborns have not one, but two sets of photos!

Ichabod Hatch
Hi Shirley,
I'm glad you sent me a message. I had to remove the photo I posted for your request yesterday because I realized the dates for the Ichabod Hatch on that stone were for his son - not the father whom you requested. I have not found Ichabod Sr.'s stone. My apologies for erroneously fulfilling your request!

Sarah Jane Tribby MENDENHALL
Agree with Debbie J. that Sara Jane Tribby MENDENHALL is neither listed in Golden, CO, Cemetery computerised record of burials, nor in its paper book of interments. Saw no gravestone for her when I inspected the likely location adjacent to the gravestone of hwe husband Milton MENDENHALL (1822 - 1907).. Will gladly e-mail to you a portable document format (".pdf") file of the record book of interments in City Section, Block 100, that includes a record of her husband Milton MENDENHALL (1822 - 1907), apparent daughter Sarah A. Mendenhall LAMM (1842 - 1935, and probable grandchildren Marian LAMM (1867 - 1945) and Clara LAMM (1869 - 1939) if you wish.

RE: Sarah Mendenhall
There is no record of her burial at Golden Cemetery. We also checked under her maiden name. We also checked the original cemetery book (that was very cool). Milton is in Block 100, Lot 1, Grave 4. Graves 4 thru 8 are 'sold' for the Mendenhall family. Once the snow is gone, I'll check the block/lot lot just to be sure. Debbie J

Benjamin and Caroline Runkle
Hello. My last message sent before I could get it typed and I couldn't delete it. Anyway, I was wondering if you could transfer the memorials for Caroline Runkle 67711428 and Benjamin Runkle 67711360 to me. They're some of my family. Thank you!

Transfer request for Absalom Gray
Shirley,
I would like to request transferring management of the Absalom Gray memorial to me, unless you are also a direct descendant. Absalom is my 3rd great grandfather and husband of Mary (Pickett) Gray. Absalom Gray's memorial is 30895104. This couple are buried in Salem South cemetery in Salem, Henry County, Iowa.

I am very grateful to you for all the work you have done on behalf of Find-A-Grave. My wife and I visited South Salem Cemetery about 10 years ago and were thrilled to find and photograph the tombstones for my Gray and Maxwell 3rd great grandparents. Thank you!

Mary J. and Robert Watts
Thanks for the additional information. I've added Mary J.'s birth in Ireland but could not link Mary and Robert as spouses as they are already linked as son and mom. Robert died in the Civil War in his 20s. If you find a memorial for Mary J.'s husband, let me know and I'll be happy to add the link. Thanks!
