I should clarify... BORN in Rock County before 1840. Scores of them. Just because it took until 1846 to become a state....... There were many here, having kids. He was only the first Sprague. All the rest were born in NY.

Yes... There are thousands of people buried in Rock County prior to 1840. Just in Miton, the Goodrich Family, who founded the town.

Just trust me. I have no personal interest in it. I was born in Edgerton, Rock County in 1963. I wasn't the first, but your ancestor wasn't, either. All you have to do is go on Find A Grave, if you like, and check out the cemeteries here. The first settlers were arriving in the early 1830's. They all have children that were born here, and I know at least the Alder family off the top of my head had sons born in the 1830's East of Milton, in Lima Center. I grew up in Milton. Really, you should send me an email.

That's rediculous, for one. He was born in 1840. I can give you over a hundred Civil War veterans that were born in Rock County prior to 1840 if you like. I live here, grew up here, and know the history. You got that probably from Sue.... He was the first Sprague born in Rock county. The rest were born in New York. I look forward to talking with you more about your family. You should send me an email to warbugs.smallwood@gmail.com so I can include you in the emails to your cousins Dale and Eric.

RE: Cousin Cecil
Okay thanks Cecil. I'll contribute what I can and if I have any issues, I'll let you know. I have documented everything I know (so far) on Ancestry.com, but I'm always looking to close gaps in the information.

Also, do you live in Wisconsin? I'm looking to travel that way in May next year. It would be good to meet you if all possible.

Eric

Thanks for the response Cecil. David W. Sprague (Orrin's younger brother) was my 3rd Great Grandfather. I will check out the database to learn more. Do you have any information about David Sr. (Orrin and David W.) parents? I've had some trouble tracking this information down.

Thanks,
Eric

Eric Sprague
Cousin Cecil
Hello Cecil,

My name is Eric Sprague and I live in Platteville Colorado. I have an interesting hobby of documenting the Sprague pedigree as far back as possible. After doing a bit of research, it appears we have similar interests in our family history. Not to mention, I believe we are cousins! I was given your name by Richard Smallwood-Roberts a former Marine who has spent most of his life repairing/replacing headstones of former servicemen/women. He contacted me asking for my permission to replace the headstone of a former Civil War veteran named William H. Sprague who is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle. I gave him permission to do so. Evidently William is buried in Fassett Cemetery in Edgerton WI. After doing more research we found more cousins and a 3rd Great Grand Uncle Orrin Sprague buried in Otter Creek Cemetery close by. According to Richard, Cecil Sprague has recreated several memorials in Otter Creek. He told me to reach out to you through “Find a Grave” to better understand your section of the family tree. I hope you are the right individual. If not, could you redirect me to the correct person?

If you are the person who has done all of this work, could you give me a bit of background about yourself please? How are you related to the blacksmith Orrin Sprague, for example? Any information would be appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks,
Eric C. Sprague

Hello Cecil,

She is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Janesville, Rock, Wisconsin. Laura the sister of my 3rd great grandmother, Harriet Sprague Everest. I would like to be able to link her to her parents, John Harvey Sprague and Anna Mead, who are buried in Sunset View Cemetery, Waltham, Addison, Vermont.
Here are the Memorial #s:
John Harvey Sprague: # 27262275
Anna Mead Sprague: # 27262211

It has been a while since I have visited the Sprague website, I will have to take another look. Thank you for all of your hard work and contributions.

Best Regards,
Kristi Fogtman

I added George as the father of Virgil and Nicholas Utz. Is Launa Royston Utz their mother?

Mary Chamberlain/Rock River
I have the Rock County Genealogy Book for Rock River Cemetery and Mary Chamberlain 1820-1903 is not listed as being there.

There is a Mary S. ChamberLIN 1820-1903 listed
in Otter Creek Cemetery which is nearby.
This Mary was the wife of James L. Chamberlin 1815-1896. She is buried next to Reuben Sprague 1836-1910.

I plan to visit Rock River and double check and will look at Otter Creek if you think this is the one you want. Let me know.
