Seth Ford
Charles Ford & Mrs. Charles Ford
Jack,

I'm hoping that maybe you can help me resolve a discrepancy and finally solve a family mystery. My great grandfather, Charles Ford, is rumored to have died in a horse breaking accident in 1910. He was married in Estancia, New Mexico. His wife, Edna Canton, moved with my grandfather, Earl Ford, to Texas where she remarried. Her second husband, Benjamin Andrews, died in 1923 and I believe I've found his grave as well. She remarried again to a man named Aspelin in the 1930s, and a short time later, divorced him. She died in 1962 and I'm 99% sure I've found her grave near other Cantons in Englewood, Kansas.

I was pretty sure when I saw your picture in the Corona Cemetery that it must be my great grandfather (given the proximity to Estancia), but my grandfather (who was six when his father died and had a poor relationship with his mother) always told my father that his dad was buried near Hobbs. Well, there's a Charles C Ford in Carlsbad Cemetery and there are two records for the same man on FindAGrave.com. One says that Charles C Ford was buried in Carlsbad in 1910 and one says Charles C Ford was buried in 1930.

To further complicate things, my great grandfather was from Iowa and the gravestone pictured in the 1910 record appears to say 'Iowa' on it. While I can't quite make out the date on the gravestone, it appears to me to say 1930, not 1910. Finally, the grave marker you took a picture of has a picture of a marker with no headstone, no name, no birthdate and no date of death. Your comment was "Kids were too cheap to buy a headstone."

I still favor your picture for my great grandfather for one more striking fact. While we don't know when my great grandfather was born, the birth date on the stone you photographed also happens to be my grandfather's birthday.

Anyway, if you can help me work out all the facts and discrepancies, I'd be grateful. The story I've pieced together based on your pictures is that my great grandfather married my great grandmother in Estancia in 1902 or 1903 and had my grandfather. My great grandfather died in 1910 and the Woodmen of the World purchased a gravestone for him in 1912 with a plot reserved for my great grandmother that was never used.

Based on your experience, I'd love to know what you think.

Thank you,
Seth Ford

RE: Nancy Slack
I'm okay either way. She's related by marriage and my mother has fond memories of her. So I'd be happy to look after it. She does have direct descendants still in the Corona area - and I'll just transfer to any of them who ask.

William W. Slack in the Corona Cemetery
Thank you for checking. I drilled down on the census records last night and it looks like Horace and William are half brothers. I'll dig further, but I would not have known this if it wasn't for findagrave and its contributors!

William W. Slack in the Corona Cemetery
Hi Jack,
I'm till trying to track down who William W Slack was - it's a real mystery. One thing that may help me: do you know where the information on the memorial about his kids and wife came from?
Thank you.

RE: Rebeca Slack @ Corona NM
Hi Jack,
That would be fine. My # is 48043575. Rebeca and her husband Horace were my G grandparents. I'm not sure about my relationships to any other Slacks in the Corona Cemetery. I know that Horace ran a sawmill in Pinos Altos with Will Slack - but I don't know how they are related - I'll have to research a bit.
Thank you.

I am sorry you had to make a 100 mile trip to find this grave. I requested it because the memorial was included in Find A Grave and there was no grave photo. I do not personally know if these people are there. I am only going on what has been added. She died in 2013. Thanks for your effort.

Dean Mitchell
Thank you so much for the time you put forth trying to find Dean Mitchell in Evergreen Cemetery. I'm sorry you went to all that trouble walking the entire place. I appreciate that while you looked all over for him, he did not have a headstone & even though this request did not turn up a photo nor confirmation he is there, I wanted you to know your effort is very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Barbara
