You're welcome! I posted other Linger Stones I saw, also.
There are more, it's going to take a while to do that cemetery, as I'm sure you know.

Hi Evelyn
Sure. I dont mind transfering memorials to family. Glad you asked. If there are others there , that are related, request them. NP

I dont see the reason to hold onto someones family due to not falling within guidelines. I like to see family with family and I dont hold to the 4 generation rule. If someone comes along that is closer related then transfering to them, is my rule of thumb.

RE: Vandalia Cemetery
My problem in finding Vandalia Cemetery, is according to wikipedia.org there isn't a community, incorporated or unincorporated, by the name of Vandalia, in Lewis County, West Virginia.
I do research for the Birkenhoerdt Project http://www.birkenhoerdt.net/ who's webmaster likes to know where cemeteries are located ... exact locations.
I've looked a satellite maps of the area along the Skin Creek without much success. Vandalia Cemetery must be shielded by trees, Also the website Lat-Long.com www.lat-long.com/ lists no Vandalia Cemetery. Lat-Long's records are basted on US Geographical Survey Records.

What can you tell me about the Vandalia Cemetery in Lewis County,West Virginia? If you don't know the GPS location, the road its on and nearest cross road or intersection. Anything you can tell tell me would be helpful.

RE: Almandus Young
You asked for Andersonville grave 148 . There is no Pvt Alexander Almandus Young buried at Andersonville National Cemetery. I have been a historian of Andersonville for more than 15 years and I have a copy of the park database as well as the cemetery database. He is not on record listed as being held at Andersonville or dying at Andersonville. I also checked for all of those who died on the date you gave 3/25/1864 and there were 17 prisoners who died on that date. No other Young or any alternate spelling. I assumed that its to odd that the same grave number you requested was the same last name you were looking for and felt there was a mistake in your request or his military showed an alternate spelling. Either way , the name your looking for is not in the Andersonville records as being there. I checked a reliable resource,,, civilwardata.com which has 4,231,245 records on civil war soldiers and there is no Almandus Young shown enlisted into any regiment. Ive checked the regimental rosters for the 8th Virginia / west Virginia and again he is not listed. Let me know if you are certain this is not your man and I will remove the photo.

Oh, well, ok then! *grin*
I guess that does make sense, looking at his birth year on the stone.
I'm going to go ahead and create his memorial, then.

Fairview cemetery
There is a seperate small cemetery in Roanoke, Lewis Co., WV named Fairview.
It's a slightly wooded are with a bit of a hillside.
Friendship/Fairview in Jane Lew/Berlin is big and mostly flat. looks like it's going to be around 1500 burials.
I've only photographed half of it, so far.
Good times, good times...*grin*

Friendship/Fairview/IOOF cemetery
I'm almost positive that these are different names for the same cemetery.
I'm going to confirm this with Hackers Creek Settlers genealogy society.
I've got a log in on the forums, now, so I can try to get them merged.

RE: George Columbus Hinzman
It looks like you already deleted your memorial for George, I can transfer the ones I made to you if you like.
I've got their marriage certificate posted on his wife's memorial, I just didn't post it on his.
There may be a Fairview cemetery in Roanoke, but most of Roanoke is under Stonewall Jackson Lake since they built the dam about 1986.
Just let me know what you would like done. I've no relation to either of them.

Fairview and Friendship are the same cemetery in Jane Lew. It's also called the IOOF cemetery, for International Order of Odd Fellows.
I'm sorry I didn't catch your entry before I made one, I've been trying to make sure I don't make duplicates.

Yes, I noticed they said Asbury also (vs Vandalia). I have no other info that might shed light on this. I don't know your source for placing her in Vandalia, but my "guess" would be that it is right. If you know where her husband is buried, that might be a clue as well.

Thanks for adding the obits I'm sending. I've noticed lots of information that might not otherwise have been known. So I hope they help everyone I'm sending them to.

Glad to know adding these obits of Lewis county is helping others. I noticed several that I've added that appear to be new info for folks including some new names for some of the more canvassed and recorded cemeteries. Happy New Year!

RE: Lowerna Thorn at Knottsville
Hi Evelyn,

I was concerned that the original transcription was based on the same poor stone, which is hard to read, and since I couldn't find a Lowerna on the WV cultural site but could find a Maud Verna (with the correct date of death) that maybe there was no Lowerna! I leave it to your discretion then. Happy to find that headstone. I saw that there were other photo requests for the Thorns, and went specifically to look for them and the others on a relatively warm January day....but I'm sorry to report that I studied the old headstones carefully and couldn't find any other Thorns. Many of the old stones in that cemetery are in poor condition.....eroded and broken off. And, some are only field stones with no visible markings. Lowerna/Maude Verna may be my last successful effort at Knottsville among the aged headstones, sorry to say. Someone has cleaned some of the stones, and still some of the older ones are beyond simple methods of reading. Thanks for your note.
