RE: St. Matthew Cemetery
Hi,
I have found several relatives in St. Matthews that are related to my grandparents there and have been able to connect them to each other. However, there are a few that I can't find burials. They are:

Harvey D. Sowers b. Apr.1837 & his wife Elizabeth Jane Dickerson b.Feb. 1837 d.June 24, 1918. Also,
their son, David Wigington Sowers b.Feb.1860 d. Nov. 23, 1904.
They are brother and grandson to David Gideon Sowers, my great grandfather. I have searched numerous cemetery lists.
I finally have a copy of Zion Lutheran's records of baptisms so David S. Sowers father does seem to be George Sowers. His father and some of his brothers/family are buried there.
The Sowers/Bowers/Dickerson/Epperlys are related in marriage through the generations.
If you have any information on Harvey D. or David W. Sowers, I would appreciate it. Thanks! Carol

RE: Epperly family in Floyd, Va
Hi John,
I started this research to learn who my ancestors were and pay tribute to my family members. I am finding that I need to research as many written documents as possible to make sure I do have facts. Some family trees can be helpful if you verify the information. There are errors in spelling and transcription so I research as much material I can find to confirm the information.I'm not sure that I will ever be confident about the names in the 3rd,
4th or 5th generations or if I really do have relatives in Zion Cemetery. I do believe we have relatives in common and that is nice to know.Carol

RE: Epperly family in Floyd, Va
Hi John,
I appreciate the time and effort providing more information on the Sowers/Epperly families.
I only knew my grandmother, Lenora Bower Sowers,
in that generation; all others had passed away.
I started with a review of the Vinson Family Tree
because they had listed David Cenior's children.
I knew 4 aunts and 1 uncle; however, there were
at least 12 children found in my mother's notes.
I looked for grave markers or evidence that David
S. Sowers/Margaret Spangler? Sowers were buried in
Floyd or Montgomery Co. with no success. David Cenior & Gideon Sowers are buried at St.Matthews.
Zion Lutheran Cemetery was the next search.
Most family trees have George Sowers 1750 as a
link; the birth dates for George's father was
10 years earlier so the extensive search began.
I viewed a Anna Elizabeth Epperly Sowers(Find A Grave)& a
note questioning the accuracy. It was the same as
Elisabeth Spangler's birth/death dates. There is a
death document attached( E. Spangler )stating her death, husband, George Sowers, and son D. Sowers
Memorial #103365129. The George Sowers 1750 has a document stating he and Jacob Sowers were in the
Revolutionary War. They came from PA with other
families to Montgomery Co.& one brother married
Jacob Epperly's daughter. Definitely a puzzle...
The grave marker of George 1750 is the only one
that is legible in Zion Cem. How can I find out his wife's name? Secondly, who is his father & grandfather since the listed family trees take
you in different directions. Do I have the right
George? Zion Cemetery probably holds the key but
the cem. grounds/stones are in such decline, will
the mystery be solved. Viewed old church list...
You mentioned Anna Elizabeth & siblings were from
Frederick Co. and I found a grave marker for David
Sowers in Haughs Cemetery but no visible dates.
The only other Sowers listed was John P. Sowers,
b. Jan. 14, 1787 d. Aug. 29, 1867. Do you have any
information on Joel Sowers b.1815 or 1788? He is listed as a brother to David S. He & his family lived in Floyd and moved to Kentucky about 1870.
A George Sowers accompanied him and they are both
buried there. The mystery of which Joel is correct.
I don't know if your wife knew anyone in Riner, but my father was postmaster there for 15 years.
He was originally from Harrison, New York, and I
have researched only his grandparents at this time. Families immigrated & settled in that area
and details are more challenging to find. Thanks!
Dad's Memorial #41100767; would like to place more
military history/pictures of him in findagrave...

RE: Epperly family in Floyd, Va
Hi John,
My grandfather was David Cenior Sowers & I believe
his grandfather was David S. Sowers. My notes
state Margaret(Spangler)Sowers married to David S.
Sowers. Household members are: Mary Epperly, Jacob
Epperly, Jas Epperly and Elizabeth Sowers(FC).
Until I know David S. Sowers parents(some think it
is George Sowers) and his wife (Eliz. Epperly or Spangler), it is difficult to proceed to other
generations. It has been a challenge!
I have tried to trace the many "George Sowers" but
cannot confirm all dates or if they are related to
David S.(no grave marker). Found a grave stone
for David Sowers in Frederick, MD but no visible
dates. John Sowers buried in the same cemetery.
I moved out of the area in 1971 and I remember
the Epperly name. Your wife's family may be a
connection to mine. If you could share your
wife's family tree, or any notes that you think
could be helpful, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you, Carol

Epperly family in Floyd, Va
Hi John,
I am researching the Sowers in Floyd/Montgomery
Co. and noticed your Bio regarding the Epperly
family. There is a question about George Sowers
b.1750 d.1834 and the name of his wife. Some say
it is Elizabeth Spangler due to the death cert.
in Floyd. I haven't been able to find anyone
that has taken a picture of the wife's stone to
confirm it. Anna Elizabeth Epperly is also
mentioned on family trees as his wife. Because
the Sowers names are repeated throughout each
generation and some of the stone inscriptions
are illegible, there is no confirmation of dates
and names. I did find evidence George Sowers
(b. 7/2/1785 d. 4/13/1880)and Elizabeth
Mary Spangler (b. 12/28/1788 d. 11/1857) were married Oct. 22, 1811. I have evidence of George
Spangler married to Elizabeth Epperly, April 1806,
found in a brief of Wills & Marriages in Mont. Co.
1773-1831. Could this be Anna Elizabeth Epperly?
Do you have any knowledge as to where she is
buried. They have her listed in Zion Lutheran
Church in Floyd but no stone to confirm it.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Carol

RE: Mary Ann Saurman-Mount Peace
Hello John, I went to check on Mary ann Simmons Saurman like you asked. Evidently some one has fixed the mistake about 4 Mount Peace entries. I checked today and there are only two entries for mount Peace in Pennsylvania. The one that has ten thousand entries in Philadelphia and one entry for a mount peace in Minersville Penna. Hopefully It stays that way Bill Pallatt

John thanks so much I just called the cemetery to try to get the location but you got there before they did. They said I have to mail in a request. You didn't happen to notice what other Henry's were in that plot did you? I've had the worst time locating them all. Some are in Fernwood-Stephen

Kingston Family Plot Photos - Mt. Peace Cemetery
With regard to the photos you had taken of the Lucius Kingston plot at Mount Peace, you mentioned that despite the lack of headstones you were able to identify the lots by the adjacent headstones. I've never seen a listing of those buried in Mt. Peace. Is there a site that might give that information? Or were you working from a different source? I have so little information on this great-grandfather and family that I always clutch at straws to try to learn more.
Thank you,

I have been trying to locate the St. Matthew Cemetery in Montgomery Co., Virginia, to view family member gravestones in the Sowers and Bower family. I see stones as current as 1992 but cannot find the location. There are pictures of the cemetery but no reliable location. Thank you.
