RE: Re: Henry Cotton
On the mothers initials, I think you need to consider that there was probably an & before them, which might take the M out? And the last letter really looks like an H to me. Just not sure...

Thanks Maggie! You think it says M.A. for the mother? I couldn't figure that out. But I had chalked it in 2 different colors trying to bring that out, and the inverted image is one with the chalk.

RE: Re: Henry Cotton
Well, I did it, but I didn't have a lot of success. The stone is so old that some of the letters are worn off. You can see "Son of" better, but as far as parents go, it may still be a mystery? I did post the photos on his memorial if you want to see, and did an inversion of the one photo. You can click on it twice to see a larger version. The first initial looks to me like an N., but it doesn't look like the N on the end of Cotton, so I'm not sure. I think the second letter is an &. Then possibly an I and an H. on the end. Let me know what you think?

Thank you Maggie! It was cold here this morning, but hopefully it will be warmer tomorrow. We aren't getting snow, thank goodness! I have to go back to Sedalia tomorrow, so I will check out what you sent and see what I can do tomorrow. :-)

Well, unfortunately it was freezing cold and I couldn't get a rubbing of the stone. I have never chalked a stone and I know they don't like people to do it, but I thought if I used sidewalk chalk and brought water to wash it all off? I'm not really sure how to go about it either? How do you chalk a stone?

They are actually a little ways apart if you look on their maps for sections 3 and 6. That will help a lot Maggie. Now I know where to look! Though it still may be awhile before I can get back to do it. Thanks for finding out where he was.

RE: Henry Cotton
I did go out and look around awhile, but I didn't find him yet. I'm not sure just where he was now. Crown Hill is a very large cemetery. I will keep looking, but I'm really not sure I will be able to find him again. If you can, you could call the cemetery office and ask them what block he is in. You can find the number in the website cityofsedalia.com.

RE: Henry Cotton
I would love to help you, but I'm not sure I could find his stone again. I have an idea of where it was though. When the weather warms up some, I will try to find the stone again and do what you ask. I'm not sure when it will be. Right now we are covered in ice. Looking at it again, it looks like it says Henry Son of H & M? Cotton. But the death date is impossible to see. And it could be his age under that.

William Keely Hawes
Hard to understand the reason for the death date for the son of William C. (Kelly) Hawes. the father is Aug 01, 1907 and Apr 10 1959, which is on the marker, it also has William Kelly Hawes Jul 24 1944 which I assume is his son birth or death date. I do not understand why they put the son on the marker with this date. Please let me know all you know

Nancy Gilliland Collins
to Zada Cotton
Hi Maggie again. Somehow the computer decided to send my message before I was finished. As I was asking is John Gilliland Lavina's father for sure? Do you know anything else about him or where he came from? We are hoping to tie the other Gillilands in the area together expecially to our ancestor Richard Gilliland born Ireland 1765 died Cross Plains 1838. Also the Margaret Gilliland who married James M. Cotton. Any info on them and their descendents woulg be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Nancy Gilliland Collins nancycollins46@gmail.com

Hi Maggie,
Yes, it is Lavina Gilliland that we are interested in. We did not know for sure who her father was.

Hi, My Gilliland cousins and I are interested in the Gilliland that married into the Cotton family. I could be more specific but don't know her name or date off the top of my head. Think her name started with an L. and married in 1800's. We don't know which branch of Gilliland's she is from.. Do you have any info that could help us.
Thanks, Nancy Gilliland Collins
