RE: Re: Azariah H. Mathews
Mary Jo,

They are not in my family. I may have found them in the virtual stroll. I like to leave flowers on memorials with neat bios, pics or old stones and your people were born in the 1700's and seeing a stone that old still standing is amazing. Plus if no flowers are on a memorial i put one on because they were people who laughed, loved, cried and died and they deserve to be remembered.

Katherine Foster grave sent
Hi Mary Jo,

This headstone was an easy find although located in a rather remote location. Luckily for you, I live very close to this peaceful spot. The condition of the grave was very good, and as you can see, the inscription quite legible. It's a pretty little headstone, very fitting for a little girl. I admit that I shed a tear or two even though I don't know the family. What a loss it must have been. There must be a sad story behind this. The church just closed in the last few months and the property is for sale probably due to lack of members. Hope the photo fulfills your need.

Regards,

Steve

Quaker dating
The memorials for Thomas P. Marshall (#25898545) and Sophie B. Marshall (#23523413) contain some erroneous information about Quaker dating. The Quakers, along with everyone else in England and her colonies, switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar on January 1, 1752. The only thing different about the Quakers was that, before and after the switch, they designated months by number rather than name. They declined to use the month names because some of them commemorated pagan Roman deities. From January 1, 1752 onward, the month numbers in Quaker records are exactly as we know them today: January is the first month and December is the 12th month. Inscribed on Thomas P. Marshall's gravestone is "Born 5th Mo. 9th, 1838" and "Died 11th Mo. 30th, 1908", so he was born on May 9, 1838, and died on November 30, 1908. On Sophie's stone it says "Born 11th Mo. 22nd, 1840", so she was born on November 22, 1840. The death date is probably inscribed below, but the stone appears to have sunk in the ground so it can't be read without digging. However, January, 1919, is undoubtedly correct based on the date of the obituary.
So only the death date of Thomas Marshall needs to be corrected, from January 30, 1909 to November 30, 1908. And I would strongly advise removing the comments about Quaker dating, which are incorrect and may lead others to make a similar mistake. It is only prior to January 1, 1752, that one must adjust the translation of month number to month name, along with other complexities that I won't go into unless you're really interested.
I apologize if this sounds a little critical, which it is not intended to be. Many people make mistakes with Quaker dating, most often in failing to make the proper corrections prior to 1752 rather than making unnecessary ones after that date. I just try to set the record straight whenever I get the chance.

HELLO AGAIN, MARY JO...
Hello...was ansering another message to me and reread yours below.
Then, you are related by marriage of a Trowbridge of mine to a Stowell.

Still, it's nice to know new relations...which Trowbridge was your Stowell married to?

Maybe we could talk further on our connections.

Blessings, Layna.

Joseph Hampton
Hi Mary Jo - I enjoyed reading your bio. I have a question about your Joseph Hampton Find A Grave #49874257. He is my 6th grt grandfather and I am curious where you got his father's name and his birth place. The only info I have found so far is in the Hampton History book which states that Joseph was born in England, but it does not list parents. I am hot on this trail and very anxious to learn more - anything you could tell me would be most appreciated. p.s. my email is on my bio page if you prefer to communicate that way. Thanks! Anne

RE: Margaret Trowbridge Stowell
Hello Mary...

Thankyou for letting me know that...not a big deal.

Are you descended from Trowbridge?

I can't remember.

If you are - do you have any portraits of the Trowbridge family?

Hope to speak further,
Blessings, Layna.

RE: Elizabeth B. Servis Wheelan
spelling was changed to what is on the stone, which is find a grave policy, so I had to change it to prevent duplicates, and I had to note in the bio that it is Whelan.
