RE: Elias Grove
Hi Joanna,

Thank you for your reply. Our ancestors do leave us with some mysteries. Except for a change of names and locations, I have been going through a similar search for one of my Civil War grandfathers.

I am not from Cumberland, but I was doing a good deal of research in Allegheny and Garrett counties, so I looked for your CSA monument in every cemetery, and I asked the locals who were knowledgeable about such things. Nothing fit the description. I am wondering if the statue you seek might not be in one of the major battlefields such as Gettysburg or Antietam? Reunions were common for the soldiers of both sides, and many chose to even be buried at these places rather than in their home towns. You would not even have to visit the battlefields. If you can scan the photo of the monument you're looking for, you can send it via email to the park historian. Each battlefield under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service has their own website, complete with a "contact us" link. I've always had good luck with them, and I usually get a response in about a week.

The names on the CSA monument in Rose Hill Cemetery in Cumberland are as follows:

Allen Brown
2nd Lt H.W. Fullenwider
Sgt. N.H.Gilbert
Watson M. Ramsey
John A. Smith
Joel R. Stow

Good Luck with your search. If you'd like the photo of the CSA monument in Rose Hill, just send me your email address.

Elias Grove
Hello Joanna,

I was looking at your photo request in Rose Hill Cemetery in Cumberland MD. If I understand correctly, you do not need a photo of Elias Grove; what you want is information on the Confederate Monument. There is a CSA Monument in Rose Hill, but it is a plain obelisk with six names engraved on an attached plaque. There is no statue of a soldier with a sword. I do have a photo of this monument, and I also photographed the graves of Elias and Sophia Grove. Before I upload any pictures to the memorial, I want to be certain that I'm giving you what you want. I'll be traveling for the next few days, but when you can let me know if any of this is what you need. Thanks.
