Good afternoon Duane, I am a Vermont Civil War buff, and am presently working on a project to identify the last resting places of many soldiers/sailors that had ties to our state. I am asking you if I may use the photo's you have posted On Find A Grave, of these soldiers, to be posted on Vermont's Civil War data base ( You would receive credit for this.

Thank you for your consideration

Philip Fravel and his family
Hi Duane,

Thank-you for your entries of my family. I really appreciate you putting them up. You helped me in one of my many searches for my relatives. I have more than what you have on their pages if you want that information please tell me. I figure if its not up there then you don't have it but would you by any chance, know Philip's parent's names? Doesn't hurt to ask.Thank-you for all your help.

Calvary Cemetery; Prairie du Chien

I appreciate the effort you put into making find-a-grave a better place to research family history. That being said, I found your posting of the picture of the Calvary Cemetery entrance photo on umpteen memorials unnerving in that when going through the cemetery to see which memorials need headstone photos, I get the wrong impression when the only photo posted for a memorial is the one you posted of the cemetery entrance. In my opinion, I shouldn't have to click on every memorial to see if a headstone photo is present or not. The entrance photo can also present a problem if there are several images that could be posted to a memorial, but the one of the entrance is taking up one of the allotted spots. I would greatly appreciate you removing the entrance photos.

Keep up the otherwise wonderful work,

Mark Goebel

Dian Babcock
Maria Schofield birth date
In my family records Maria's birth is August 1806 New York. That is all I have
In the 1870 Census New Oregon, Howard County, Iowa George Wheeler Schofield 67 seems to be living alone. in 1880 Census Vernon Springs, Howard County, Iowa Maria is living with her daughter Emeline McCullock.
And in the family records I have George Wheeler Schofield died January 26, 1878
This information is only written out from a Bible probably. Dian

Dian Babcock
George Wheeler Schofield
To Len, I just came back on to check out all the obituaries I typed out and this was my first to read and saw you had left a message.
My great grandmother was Almeda Schofield Clark.
I see that I don't have a burial place for George W. Schofield but thought since he died first that he may have been buried else where but Maria died like 5 years later at her daughters home in Cresco, Iowa. I don't see a grave for George in the New Oregon Cemetery.
Looks like they left New Oregon, Iowa and moved to Cresco, Iowa in the early 1870's, so that must be their last home together. There is a letter he wrote to his daughter, Almeda Clark a few months before he died in October 7, 1877 saying how he worked hard and was wearing out that he didn't have much time left on earth. I wonder too if he was buried near Maria.

Thank you for all your work on this project! I am trying to find out where Mathias was born. The closest I can get is Prussia. Do you know if anyone would have the town?

Edna Stratford
Elise Caroline Zimmermann 21 July 1857 7 July 1893
Thank you so very, very much for the picture of my grandmother's headstone on Find a Grave. She was born in Bern, Switzerland, and after her husband's death she brought her seven living children to America so her unmarried brother, Adolph Rudolph Zimmermann, who was living in Iowa, could help her raise them. With Elise's death in 1893, just five years after their arrival, her brother was left to care for these children ranging in age from four to sixteen. He took the orphaned family to Kalispell, Montana, where he raised them. No family members remained in the area. He and Lena, the oldest child and only daughter of Elise, went back to Switzerland in 1916. In my Aunt Lena's journal she records that on the way home to Montana, she stopped in Cresco, to see the headstone that had been placed on her mother's grave. They had ordered it on their way to Switzerland. In past years I have researched the cemetery trying to see if a headstone still existed. I was told that none existed. In fact a lady sent me photos of the grassy, empty grave site, and of the cemetery entrance. I am the only living descendant of Elise Caroline Zimmermann Walchli, other than my 5 children and 22 grandchildren. In Sep. 2012 I googled my grandmother's name was extremely surprised and thrilled to see a photo of her headstone taken by a Mr. Hedlund of CO. I contacted him, but he had no information on who had requested the photo. Years ago I contacted the Cresco library hoping to get an obituary. I was told there wasn't one, but was sent a clipping from the newspaper and those tender words about her I recorded on her Find a Grave site. I've wondered if that is the original headstone and why it couldn't be found before. It looks like an old style headstone, but appears to be in such good condition that I wonder if someone may have replaced it and who that would be. There are no relatives in the area and haven't been since her death. I've had no luck in contacting the sexton at the cemetery, although I tried several times in the past. If you have any information at all about her, the burial, the headstone, anything, I would greatly appreciate it. I know so very little about her and am trying for even the slightest speck of information. Sorry this message is so long, but I'm so very grateful for your photo and that it is on Find a Grave. Thank you for your bio and your offer to help. Edna Walchli Stratford

Linda M. Welch
Hello: I am looking to find out the death date of Asa Bond and his wife Betsey Bond. they are in the Cresco Cemetery. They came to Iowa from Cavendish, Vermont in early 1830s. We at the Cavendish Historical Society are doing a project tracing all our early families. You have Asa passing away in 1862, but he was still alive in 1870, as we have a few letters that Betsey wrote back to Vermont about him and her and their lives there. Is there anyway I can get an obituary for both of them. tThanks so much.

Terry (Todd) Ferl
Britha Overboe 68920583
Would you kindly add (copy and paste) the following obituary to Britha's memorial:

Brita Christenson, daughter of Kristen and Eli Bergteig, was born on the 16th of September, 1865 [i.e., 1866]. Her birthplace, as designated in her copy of Skriver's "Sjaele-Skat" which she presented to her pastor shortly before her death, was "Gaarden Teigen i Lysters Prestegjeld i Bergenstift i Norge." She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith in her home community in Norway. On the first of May, 1892, she emigrated from Norway, coming to Jacksonville Township, Chickasaw County, Iowa, where she found employment which continued until her marriage to Ole O. Overboe on September 25, 1909. She continued to live on the Overboe homestead, 8 miles northwest of New Hampton after the death of Mr. Overboe on September 18, 1937, until ill health compelled her to leave her old home.

Mrs. Overboe suffered an illness of five years duration which became acute the last few months of her lifetime during which she was given affectionate care by her daughters at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cutsforth.

She departed this life on Tues. Feb. 23, 1943 at the Cutsforth home at the age of 77 years, 5 months, and 7 days. She was given Christian burial at Jerico Lutheran Church in which she had held membership during her lifetime in America. She was preceded in death by her husband, and by one son, Albert, who died in Hollonquist, Canada on Jan. 22, 1930. She is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Clarence Cutsforth and Mrs. Carl Vikdal, 8 grandchildren, 6 brothers and 2 sisters: Halvor of Lawler, IA, John of Canada, Herman residing in California, and Christopher, Johannes, and Lars, who reside in Lyster Sogn, Norway, Mrs. Ingeborg Vikdal of Lawler, and Elisabeth Loven of Oslo, Norway. Albert was Brita's son by a previous marriage. (Source:
