Rufus Hurst
Hi Sharon,

There is quite a distance from the Barren Springs community and the Fosters Falls community in Wythe Co Va, where I grew up. And there are a few Hurst Cemeteries. Can you tell me if the Hurst aka Hubbard Cemetery here at find a grave is the correct one for my gg-grandfather, Rufus Hurst?
Thanks Debbie

here is the Find A Grave description

Barren Springs
Wythe County
Virginia USA

The Hurst cemetery is located about 150 yards from the southwest side of state Route 607 (Little Reed Island Road) approximately one mile east of the intersection with state route 100.

ALSO known as the Hubbard Family Cemetery

Linking children to parent
I am not able to link children to Mary Ann Johnston as that action must come from the child memorial.
The one who maintains a memorial of a person can only link parents or spouse to that memorial. You will need to ask the person who has the child memorial to do the linking. Actually I think one of the persons you asked for is maintained by you.

Hurst ancestry
That is great! I look forward to sharing information!!

It sure was harder back in the day...waiting sometimes for months to get a record...ancestry made a big difference.

And Katherine Kent Holden wrote a book about one of the allied families to my Hursts in VA and that was invaluable to me early on. Her book was called The Early Family of Southwest Virginia.
There was one copy of it in my local WV Library.

Please email me at wood.deborah at aol dot com and let me know what email or user name to send your invitation to. Look forward.

Dear Cousin Sharon!

Love So Cal when I've visited. I'd be happy to invite you to my tree on ancestry dot com. I've worked on the line for 20 years and I've been very careful with the facts and sources.

Rufus Hurst

Well, it may have been Francis, but you know there are several Hurst will the middle name Franklin and Forrest. I've always wondered.

It's good to know you, cousin! My paternal grandmother, the only grandmother I was able to know, was the Hurst in my family. I just love this line. I admired what the Hurst folks did with their lives.

And in Wythe Co where I grew up, as well as Pulaski and maybe Carroll Counties, there are more than a few Hurst it's never easy to find....but this new information is greatly appreciated! Thank you, again!

Cousin Debbie, now in WV

RE: Looking for a grave
The Smith Letters tell some interesting stories. It appears Isaac Hurst was in the 29th VA Inf, captured at Suffolk, two years later he serves a year in Union Army. I cannot find his POW record. It would make a good story.

Smith Letters

In looking at military units I found these letters. The Smiths and Hursts seem to have documented and interesting history during the Civil War period. You may know of them, but thought you might find them useful.

Good hunting

RE: Looking for a grave
Thanks for keeping me informed. I would be interested in all things about Isaac's & Jesse's family Hurst. Very interesting stories. Did I see you had the story about Jesse coming home in the war. Any story as to why Isaac joined the Union Army? I would like to see the story if you don't mind.

Thanks again

Looking for a grave
As I have been searching for locations of Hurst graves, I noticed that Jesse & Isaac married sisters. Would you by any chance know the location of Isaac's wife's grave. That would be Sarah E. Smith Hurst?
I cannot find out where or when she died. If you should happen onto any information would you please send it along.

Pre-revolutionary War through the Gray, and Rhode, lines. This is a link to the Hurst family in Long Beach, CA.

My Grandfather was another of their children, and lived in Sheridan, WY. His sister was killed in a flash flood around Longmont, CO in 1919, along with all of her children, and Mother in-law.

I went back to Wyuka Cemetery today to the Maddox site. Here's the deal.
Only three sides of the family monument are inscribed: Job, Mary A., and Mahala. Unfortunatly the stone is so wheathered it is hard to read. I posted close up photos of Job and Mahala, but as you can see even with close ups they are hard to read.
Also, I while I was there I found Ella Maddox Young. She is buried with the rest of the Young family. I don't know if you are interested in them, but I did post photos of all of them as well, so you can check those out too.

Anyway, I hope that helps, but if you need other photos, let me know!

RE: Catherine Hurst Nelson
yeah please let me know...I'll be waiting be sure you give Shantel all the names Catherine could have gone by on names. When I did a call to the Cemetery for Catherine, the person said that they would call back in 2 hours...keep track of when you called; if they don't call you back..then you call them as they may lack on return calls. Also some of the Mausoleums are locked and need to be open by the ground keeper-find out if Catherine's Mausoleum Section needs the ground keeper key. I'll be waiting..for your response.

Catherine Hurst Nelson
Hi Sharon,
I just noticed someone had already did a search for you on Catherine; since I didn't know this until now. Earlier in the day I had went to the cemetery and talk to the Office Manager: Shantel Morales. She was very nice and very helpful. Catherine was the only name I had requested. Shantel took your request and went to another location near the office to look,(There are no computers at this Cemetery Office and the requested search is done by hand and searched through indexed cards)-I had told her I was looking for a "Catherine Ann Nelson"; she came back with a "No Find" and asked if Catherine has another name so I gave "Catherine Ann Hurst" again she came back with a "No Find"; and then she said that there is a Catherine spelled with a K and had died in 1988 and husband Claude Hurst (I wondered is this a related family member?) was the one who had buried her. Shantel had suggested that you call hall of records to get a death certificate and see the correct location of burial. Sharon, I suggest that you call the Cemetery and talk to Shantel Morales (310) 631-1141 Open Hours-M-F 8a-4p (Out of office for lunch 2p-3p). You are the only one that can answer the questions she has asked me, Also what I will do for you is look at the other nearby Cemetery Woodland Memorial Park Compton, CA and request for your Catherine at that one. I will keep your request for Catherine open, If you are able to get a location on her at Angeles Abby Memorial Cemetery then please let me know and I will take your request and get your picture. If she is not found at either Cemetery then I will remove your reqest for Catherine and hopefully you will find her at another location. ~This is all we can do at this end as your seekers~

Sharon, that's great! Someone else sent me a map of the entire cemetery, so all I need is the scan of the grave layouts in the Four Seasons Garden. Please email it to
