Mary Abrams spencer
Where did you find the death date for Mary Abrams spencer wife of James spencer? You listed it as 9 may 1835 in sommerset, perry co, ohio. I have been to the hope well baptist cemetery several times and found the tombstone for James spencer but not one for Mary Abrams spencer. Please contact me at with your response. Thanks

Bruce Boyd
RE: William Fischer Boyd
Thanks for the reply. I have similar problems with my Boyd line. Because of a Y-DNA match, I'm pretty sure my 2nd g-grandfather came from Hawkins County, TN, but because most of their records were burned during the Civil War, I have no proof of this connection. These Boyds came to TN from Virginia, so that may be where our connection is, but we may never know for sure. I'll just keep looking!

William Fischer Boyd
Hello JJ,
I see that you left flowers on the memorial for William Fischer Boyd (#29561398) back in 2009. I was wondering if you had a connection to William. He is my 1st cousin 1x removed and I am trying to find any living descendants of our common ancestor William F Boyd (b.1848 in McDonough County, IL, d. 1925 in St. Louis, MO). Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Bruce Boyd

You're welcome - my Black Friday was much better spent in cemeteries than in shopping centers! I also posted the same photo to his wife's memorial.

Dedication Honors Portage Township Pioneers

NW Indiana: Brendan Clancy, Portage Township Trustee, invites the public to a Dedication Ceremony in honor of some of Portage Township’s earliest settlers on Thursday, October 30th, 2014 at McCool Cemetery (2700 McCool Road, Portage IN 46368) at 3p.

A beautiful, new memorial has recently been erected at McCool Cemetery to remember those first settlers who are buried at James Shrock Cemetery which was established in 1836 and is located alongside the present day Indiana Toll Road.

The James Shrock Cemetery nearly became obliterated and removed when the Indiana Toll Road was constructed. The original survey plans for the toll road had the roadbed going through the cemetery, however, protests from a local Chesterton resident blocked the obliteration and saved the old cemetery.

Through the years the James Shrock Cemetery has been the recipient of vandalism and mistreatment, leaving many of the head stones broken and missing. Portage Township Cemetery staff have worked to piece the puzzle of broken head stones back together, gather data of pioneers buried at the old cemetery, and have erected a new monument at McCool Cemetery so these early pioneers will not be forgotten.

Join the Portage Township Trustee’s office as they dedicate and pay tribute to some of Portage Township’s earliest settlers. For more information contact McCool Cemetery at 219-763-2717 or

Hi JJ Coppinger,

I apologize for this long overdue reply. For the first time today, I finally enabled Messages on my Contributor Page. I was touched to see such an outpouring of compassion from you and other Find-a-grave family members. I thank you for your words of encouragement. I pray that the Lord will continue to strengthen you and use you to touch many hearts!

I want to add, I am sorry for the passing of your loves ones. If it is any consolation, remember that the love you shared is alive in you and recorded eternally in the history of time.

Thank you for providing your love and affection to Asia and others in my family!

James/Schrock Cemetery - Portage
Brendan Clancy announced at his State of the Township address at the Bonner Senior Center on Feb. 13, 2014: Improvements to James-Schrock Cemetery - A steep incline at the main entrance has prohibited access to many visitors. We are currently under construction of a new entrance into James/Schrock Cemetery. As soon as the weather cooperates we will continue with this project. Also, a new James-Schrock memorial monument will be installed at McCool Cemetery. This monument will list the names of the deceased at James-Schrock Cemetery. A dedication ceremony is being planned.~Kathy

Re: John Pitkin
I am looking for a close relative of John "Pa" Pitkin. I have a small family heirloom that bears this inscription. I found you linked to the Reverend John Pitkin. It is possible that the family I am looking for resided in New England.

Evans Fairall Cemetery
Jackson Twp., Muskingum Co., Ohio
Hello JJ:
After calculating many dates of birth for burials in the Evans Fairall Cemetery, I read your note to Shaun/Mucer99 and his reply. He did a tremendous job in that cemetery. He unearthed stones, cleaned some up, tackled weeds, etc., to photograph and record every stone remaining in this cemetery. Thank Heavens for a wonderfully dedicated contributor like Shaun.

Shaun contacted me for directions to the cemetery. He had seen my note to CJW asking for someone to go there with me due to my health situations, being afraid something might happen to me in such a desolate place without cell service. Shaun said he had grown up in that area and never knew the cemetery existed. My grandson who lives and rides a 4-wheeler in the area found it when out exploring. Knowing my obsession for old cemeteries, he took me there. I won't go into detail here, but I went back a couple of times thinking I could go it alone, but the terrain was kind of damp and hilly, I almost got stuck. Then....along came Shaun! Blessings to him for the preservation of this cemetery through transcriptions and photos. I just thought you might be interested in the story of Shaun and his strength to perform this hearty job. Sincerely.....
