Bettie Wilkerson
Oops, I see both verses are indeed on the marker! Her son's name is William Rufus Griffin, my great grandfater.

For Bettie Wilkerson:
In 1883, Bettie's oldest son William Rufus was upset to learn his mother intended to marry Mr. Wilkerson. At age 18, he told his mother he would leave if she did. So when the wedding took place, William left home. He returned only for a few brief visits over the next seven years. In 1890 when he got word his mother was dying (heart attack?) he hurried home to see her but was too late.

He never recovered from his heartbreak and selected the marker for her grave, adding the verse that told of his sorrow of losing her: " One by one earth's ties are broken, as we see our love decay, and the hope so fondly cherished, brighten but to pass away."

The second verse not on the marker is: "One by one our hopes grow brighter as we near the shining shore, for we know across the river wait the loved ones gone before." Author Unknown.

RE: Samuel J. Sellers
Sellers does seem to be a more common name than I always considered it. Two of my late husband's nephews married Sellers girls...neither of whom is related to the other or to my Sellers relatives. Thank you for asking about Samuel though. One never knows when you'll discover a "new" relative or friend through the generous spirit most researchers have in sharing their information.

RE: Henry S. Hawks
Hi, I got your message to me about henry S. Hawks. However, I noticed that you created the memorial and photos, not me. So, I'm not sure what information you are referring to that I may have contributed. Please explain.

Thanks.

Would you consider transferring Olin and Annie Dawson to me? They are family. I had them in the wrong cemetery due to death certificates and transferred them today. Another Find A Grave member let me know that he'd taken headstone photos at the correct cemetery.

I've done considerable research on Annie's line and already have links up to most of the family for future researchers. Thanks, in any event.

Cemeteries in Rockwall Co.
Hi Marian,

Noticed you've done research in Heath Cemetery, Rockwall, Tx.

Just wondering, is Heath Cemetery and Heath Baptist Church Cemetery one and the same??

Many thanks,

Marian, would you consider removing the photo of the temporary memorial for Jorge, I was out there today and the permanent marker is in place and apparently Find A Grave has a limit on the photos. Thanks Mimi

I would love too but the state listed them not me. I just took photos of the headstone, sorry.
Try contacting findagrave since the state did it and see if they can for you.

James Smith Headstone
Thank you SO much, Marian! James is a grandfather that I never knew...he died when my mother, his daughter, was only three years old. I live in California, so I've never even seen his gravesite.

Again, thank you so very much.

Rockwall Memorial
I went to the city today and spoke with Kay. She said that the Parks dept. took down the fence that was next to the old Rockwall sign. I showed her pictures of the debris on the Foree's tombstones. I showed her where Horace Wilkerson's was broken again. She said that her guys (they are meter readers) can only work on the cemetery on Fridays. They have cleaned up quite a bit of the bushes that were covering some of the tombstones, they still need to work on it a lot. She said that she is trying to get a fence to put up around the portion of the cemetery that is next to the creek. I asked her about getting historical status for at least the old section and she said that 2 people are working with the state. She said that the stones have to be moved to move their bases...and they will put them back when they level them. She asked that we give her dept. about 3-4 months to complete the work on the cemetery. I also expressed my concerns about 205 being so close to the cemetery and that we need to protect the history of the cemetery. I would like to go out there with Deborah (she took classes on cemetery restoration) and survey and uncover the stones that are in the old section and buried. Kay and I also talked about getting the stones repaired by a professional. Maybe if we stay on her she will get it all done. The stones that are piled where the fence used to be, I wonder if we could locate where they need to go and put them back. I haven't looked at the cemetery book lately, there is one that was published in the 1970's that probably would show about where they need to go.

If the construction workers are knocking over the tombstones we need to let Kay Robison at the City of Rockwall know. I would love to get a historical designation for at least the old part of the cemetery. I met a lady the other day that does cemetery restoration. She said she would show me how to properly survey a cemetery and to look for hidden stones. If you want to be included let me know, I love all the old stones out there they need to be protected.

Rockwall Memorial Cemetery
In 2007 I completed a survey of Rockwall Memorial Cemetery. It took me a year to complete. If you need them I have over 4000 photos of this cemetery. The Old section is just behind the newer section. The Texas Tombstone Project has the complete list and photos. I got a plat map from the city of Rockwall and located and updated their map to include the more recent burials.
