I just figured out who Joseph Armes was.

This is the information on the girl that killed him.

On June 5, Alma Bell killed Joe Armes. She said he'd wronged her by backing out of engagement. She was arrested following day. Her case started last week with Judge Arnot from Placerville sitting in for Prewett. Problems getting jurors as most people prejudiced in her favor. Reporters from all over converge on Auburn. Pictures of principals in trial, including attorneys.

Bell case continues. 132 men examined to get 12 for jury. Special prosecutor, George W. Hamilton, opened case. L.L. Chamberlain for defense. Young girl, one of 12 children of father Pike Bell who went on sprees and died when Alma very young. Mother went to work, and older children ran ranch.

Alma Bell acquitted. "Not guilty, by reason of insanity." Jury out 1-1/2 hours. Third ballot. Story of her unfortunate father given by mother. Case over, she is free to go.
