Bernaards/Hellemons Family Tree
In course of my genealogical search, I'm currently working on a article about forefathers who immigrated to the US. In that search I discovered your information online about John Hellemons, who lived in North Dakota and was married to Anna Elizabeth Andor.
John Hellemons' mothers maiden name was Bernaards, she's a far cousin of mine. John was born on 27 january 1906 in Nieuw-Vossemeer. You described his birthplace as 'Vasmeer, Amsterdam' on the website Findagrave.com. Actually, Nieuw-Vossemeer is far away from Amsterdam, it is a village in the mainly catholic south of the Netherlands, close to my hometown Bergen op Zoom. John was born there, a son of Jan (John) Hellemons sr. from Steenbergen and Dingena (Daphne) Bernaards from Nieuw-Vossemeer. They immigrated to North Dakota around 1917, after they had lived in Dinteloord, close to Nieuw-Vossemeer and Steenbergen. Steenbergen, Nieuw-Vossemeer and Dinteloord are all villages below sealevel, I've heard Americans find that rather exceptional ;)
The family tree of the Bernaards family is available at my personal genealogical website, www.stamboombernaards.nl. If you'd like to know more, I could e-mail you the whole family tree (that goes back to 1460) in English, as my website is written in Dutch. The family name 'Hellemons' comes from the name 'Van Helmont' which points to a heritage in Helmond, a town in the east of North-Brabant (the southern province of the Netherlands). This family goes back to the year 1605.
So far I've traced four of my ancestral families that immigrated to America. Maybe you can tell me more about John Sr., Daphne and their children? It's kind of hard to trace information about them, as Ancestry.com isn't a free website and Dutchmen usually don't have a creditcard.. As far as I know, they had got six children, Jan (1906), Willem (1916), Antone (1921), Maria (or Mary, 1923), Betty (1924) and Daphne (1926). I hope you could maybe tell a little more about them and their story in the States?
I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
