Sorry Kent, I just now saw your message. Unfortunately, I don't have any information on Mathias military service record. I have seen the widow pension, but unable to verify if it is my gGGrandfather. Good luck with your search..

|Pat Shaw||RE: Watkins cem.|
Thank you Kent! That would be good if you could do that. And yes I was in awe of that house even that long ago. My love of history and old houses seems to have always been a part of me. I have seen the house at Watkins Mill and to me James Watkins home was more impressive. Don't remember how high the ceilings were but they were very high, I remember the going up the main stairs and going thru the bedrooms, and down the smaller stairway down to the kitchen. It needed a lot of work but still so beautiful.
Thanks for helping

|Pat Shaw||Watkins cem.|
Thanks for the transfer of Jane.
Do you have any idea how to straighten out that the two Watkins brothers have a family cem. on their farms and both are named Watkins ? It is a little confusing as they are several miles apart in the same county. Is there way to have Find A Grave at least name one James Watkins Cem. and the other one Waltus Lockett Watkins Cem.???
I was lucky to have been in the James Watkins house before it burned. Was truly beautiful we had a friend that had bought it and was trying to restore it.

|Sharon Wallen||RE: Nathan Carey Photos|
I took my picture off of Nathan's memorial. I'm glad you contacted me instead of having two of the same picture. Nothing came up and said anything about it being a request. I've noticed your other pictures and they are very good. I've enjoyed putting some pictures on Fairview Cemetery because very seldom do I have to send corrections. I fought that in Cass County, where information was wrong on memorials, and people didn't want to take the time to change it.
I love Find A Grave for the research aspects of it!

|Cheryl Locher Moonen||George W. Healey|
Hi Kent, I found this article in the Telegraph Herald and thought you'd find it interested. It states many of the same things you already have but are elaborated. Cheryl
RECEIVES A MEDAL
GEORGE W. HEALEY IS VOTED
A MEDAL BY CONGRESS
Medal is Given in Recognition
of a Gallant Act Preformed by
Mr. Healey at Newman, Ga.,
July 29, 1864 Col. Henderson
Was Instrumental in Securing
it for Mr. Healey
George W. Healey, the popular hardware man, is receiving the congratulations of friends these days. The cause of same is due to the fact that the Congress of the United States has presented him with a medal of honor bearing the following description: The Congress to Corporal George W. Healey, Company E., Fifth Iowa Calvary, for Gallantry at Newman, Ga. July 29, 1864. Accompanying the medal was a button to be worn in lieu of the former. The communication from Assistant Secretary of the Navy Meiklejohn, directing that the medal be sent to Mr. Healey, containing the reason for its award as follows: On this occasion Private Healey, while surrounded by the enemy, alone, captured a confederate solider, and with the aid of a comrade who joined him later, captured four other confederate soldiers, disarmed the five prisoners, and brought them all into the union lines.
The medal was made by Tiffany, of New York and is of beautiful design. Sometime ago, the old veterans of this city suggested to Col. Henderson the idea of securing the medal for Mr. Healey. Under an act of congress passed, March 3, 1863, all soldiers who were known to have in any manner preformed an act of bravery or gallantry are entitled to public recognition and awards. Accordingly Col. Henderson brought the matter before the war department with the above result.

|William Kooi||Kooi family|
My name is William Kooi. I'm a great-grandson of Willem and Everdina Kooi. My dad is also William Kooi, and his father was also William (Will -- Willem and Everdina's son). I've been working through a copy of the family history compiled by Muriel Kooi in 1980, and ran across several of your entries here. Would love to hear from you and figure out the relationship, and also to know what other treasures you may have turned up about our family. I hesitate to put my email address here since this will be a public message, but if you contact me via find-a-grave, we'll figure out a way.
