He was one of 12 Civil War veterans buried in Hamlin Cemetery. His brother Obadiah, also buried in Hamlin was also a Civil War Vet. The Rice's originally started the cemetery as a family lot and then agreed to let it be used for public use about 1866 when Thankful Jones was first public burial there.
