Spouse to Jim D. Hylton
Mother to Joe and Jack Hylton
Sister to Shawn Evelyn Sawyer, John Timothy Sawyer, David Bruce Sawyer
Biological Father: Herbert L. Lanier
Adoptive Father: John Burns Sawyer
Mother: Margaret Isabelle Oliver Martinez

Born in 1937 in East Texas; namesake of her GG Grandmother; Margaret "peggy" Hepler Smith & her G Grandmother, Isabell Jane Smith; to Margaret Isabell Oliver and Herbert L. Lanier. Shortly after the birth of brother David Bruce in 1941, Margaret and Herbert divorced and Margaret returned to her family home in Enid, Oklahoma with her 2 young children. Peggy and David had many warm memories of growing up in the home of their grandparents, Besse and Howard Oliver among their numerous young aunts and uncles, who were all still living at home, as Margaret was the eldest of 11 siblings.

It was WWII and many young women entered the work force, Margaret among them found work in Dallas, Texas and lived there during the week and came home on the weekends to be with her children and family. At about six year of age; about 1943 was when Margaret met the young Navy Pilot, John B. Sawyer who was stationed at the Ft. Worth Naval Air Station. A courtship ensued and they married in Texas; John adopting the young Peggy and David into the Sawyer family. After his discharge from the Navy they lived as a family in Houston, Galveston and Corpus Christi, Texas. John was working as a Greyhound Bus Driver throughout Texas. Brother John Timothy was born in 1947 in Houston.

Around 1949-50, John moved his young family back to his hometown of Winterset, Iowa. Peggy was about 13 years old and brother David was about 8 years old and Timmy was about 2 years old. They lived for several years in the old Sawyer family farmhouse a few miles outside of town in Stanzel township, Adair/Madison Counties. Peggy and David attended the one-room school house down the road in Stanzel. Myself, Shawn Evelyn born in 1951. Peggy and David were her mother's second pair of hands, caring for the younger children and helping with chores around the farm. Peggy attended Greenfield and Winterset High Schools.
In about 1954 the family moved into the town of Winterset, Madison County, Iowa. Peggy attended college at Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls to study Early Childhood Developent; with an interest in teaching Kindergarten ages. The following year she married her childhood sweetheart in 1957, Jim Hylton of Winterset. Jim and Peggy then relocated to Minnesota for his work and later to Denver, Colorado.

During her teen years after many complaints of headaches, Peggy was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor in the cerebellum area of the brain. She received treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, with partial success, but the tumor kept growing. She functioned normally until is was decided when she was 21 years old and a newlywed that they needed to risk a major surgery to remove the entire tumor, the surgery was experimental at the time and her chances for survival was at best 50/50. She had a very tough recovery but she beat the odds and the surgery was successful in removing the tumor; but she sustained some permanent impairments in her gait, her hearing, her speech, facial muscle tone and also the loss of her left eye.

Peggy amazed us all with her positive outlook, her loving and warm spirit. She rarely complained about her lot in life; she had the most generous and kind heart; a great sense of humor, but at the same time she had a will of steel. She had a deep belief in her God and loved her life. She believed the true miracle of her life was not her own survival but the birth of her two sons; the loves of her life, Joseph Dale Hylton born in 1965 and Jack Joseph Hylton born in 1969 both in Colorado where they are thriving with families of their own.

I remember Peggy more as a 2nd mother (one who never spanked or scolded) than a sister. She was my constant companion and nursemaid the first 6 years of my life, sharing a bedroom and tucking me into bed at night. When she left home after marrying, I kept asking her when she was coming home. I often was included in "the dates" during the courtship of Jim and Peggy riding in the leather backseat of his beloved 1950-something Oldsmobile.
