Robert F. Dowdell was shown as residing in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, when he enlisted in the US Army at Camp Perry, Lacarne, OH, on Nov. 2, 1942 ... He was later assigned to the 455th AAA Bn., after the unit was formed in Sept. 1942...The 455th AAA trained at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga., then went overseas to Norfolk, England (in Sept. 1943). 'Bob' Dowdell was in Battery 'B', 2nd Pltn. HQ under Lt. Richard Gaston. His rank was PFC. .. Bob's unit was located at a B-17 bomber airbase at Snetterton Heath, Norfolk, England.
In July 1944, the 455th AAA went to France for 'Operation Cobra', as part of Patton's 3rd Army, Walker's XX Corps. They later went into Germany and Austria and returned home in October 1945. The unit shotdown/damaged over 130 German aircraft and became the second highest-scoring antiaircraft unit in Patton's 3rd Army. Bob was shown in a number of photos taken in 1944-1945, in France along the Moselle River, where his outfit was under shellfire from artillery at Metz, and later in Germany on 'reconn' missions.
He resided in Parma, Cuyahoga Co., OH at the end of his life and passed away in Cleveland, OH, in 1979 at age 55.
