Edward F. Gaydos of South Main Street, Plains, died Thursday morning at Riverstreet Manor, Plains, following a brief illness.
Born in Ashley, he was a son of the late Michael and Anna Kozich Gaydos.
He moved to Wilkes-Barre as a child.
He attended St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Elementary School and was a 1941 graduate of Coughlin High School.
He served in the U.S. Army in the artillery and later in the infantry during World War II, seeing action at the Anzio beachhead, in Southern France and in the invasion of Germany.
He was awarded the bronze star while in the infantry in Germany.
He was employed as a pressman at the International Color Printing Co. for 30 years and at the Philadelphia Inquirer for two years.
He also worked at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for seven years before retiring in 1986.
For many years, he was a cantor at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Hanover section of Nanticoke; St. Michael's Catholic Church, Glen Lyon; St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Pittston and St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Kingston.
He was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre.
He also was a member of the Plains American Legion Post 558, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 283, Kingston; the North End Slovak Citizens Club, Wilkes-Barre, and the Carpatho-Russian Citizens Club, Hudson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; infant daughter, Mary; brothers, Michael, Peter, George and John; sisters, Anna Nat, Elizabeth and Leona Gaydos, Sister M. Andrea and Irene Gorgol.
Surviving are sons, Robert, Virginia; Edward, Wilkes-Barre; Michael, Plains; daughters, Sharon Kuncio, Plains; Karen McCrone, Pittston; brother, Joseph Gaydos, Wilkes-Barre; 14 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Mary A. Harostock Funeral Home, 480 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Dallas.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Parastas services will be at 7 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. John Sekellick, officiating.
A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Saturday by the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's.
