Gordon LaPoint Onstott, born in Gridley, California, the son of Frederick Arthur and Leta G. (née LaPoint) Onstott on October 13, 1917 went to local schools, and then entered the University of California at Berkeley. He is listed as a member Zeta Psi Fraternity in 1939 as a senior classman (Cal's Blue & Gold Year book 1940). He is also listed "In Memoriam" (Stanford University's Quad Yearbook of 1945) for Californians lost during World War II.

First Lieutenant Gordon L. Onstott, service number 1583462 is listed as killed in action on June 16, 1944, on the beaches of Normandy. He was interred, per US Army registry sources "in California."
