One of the pioneers of Warren County, was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Being an opponent of slavery, he freed his slaves and moved to Warren County, Illinois and located in Monmouth Township in 1837. In Kentucky he followed the trade of a tanner, but upon coming to Illinois he bought land and improved the farm now occupied by Lafayette Marks. Among his household effects, upon his arrival in Warren County, was a cook stove which is believed to have been the first in the county.
