Samuel A. Foster, Pvt. August 20 1864 killed in action Pine Bluff, Tenn.

"Pine Bluff" referred to a cliff overhanging the Tennessee River in Stewart county, Tennessee, not the name of a town. This was only a few miles from Fort Donelson, where Captain Turnbull and 10 men (some as young as 16) had been dispatched earlier that morning. Only 3 survived the guerilla attack. All 8 killed arrived in Monmouth aboard the same baggage car on 8 September 1864, and were buried in various area cemeteries.
