Spartanburg, SC - - Aquilla Ann Brown Smith, 70, of 117 Summit Hills Drive, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
Born in Gaffney, she was the wife of Lonnie L. Smith and daughter of the late Frank and Aquilla Wilkins Brown. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Gaffney High School and Limestone College. She served as one of the first Journeyman for the Southern Baptist Convention from 1969-1971, was a teacher in the Cherokee County School System from 1971-1973 where she was active with the Association of Retarded Citizens, was the S.C. State Director of Women's Missionary Union from 1973-1977, was the State Director of the New Mexico Women's Missionary Union from 1978-1995 and was the WMU Director for the Maryland and Delaware Southern Baptist Convention from 1996 until her retirement. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church in Laurel, Maryland.
Surviving in addition to her husband is a sister, Mildred Wilson and husband, Don, of Shelby, NC; a nephew, George Wilson and wife, Susan, of Shelby, NC; a niece, Margaret Bradshaw and husband, Dan, of Hillsborough, NC; two great-nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Basil Brown.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Goucher Baptist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 1:00 PM at the Church with Rev. Norman Gardner officiating. Interment will be in the Goucher Baptist Church Cemetery.
