Annis Matson (aka Mattison, Mattson) was born on Feb 1, 1819 in Columbia Township, Bradford County, PA, the eighth of nine known children born to James Matson (1772-?) of Simsbury, Connecticut and Amanda "Menda" Barnes Matson (1780-?) of Rutland Co, Vermont. In Jan 1823, when Annis was four, the family moved from Northern Pennsylvania to Harmony, Chautauqua County in western New York.
Annis first married Enkland Dart with whom she had two children:
Abel Dart (1840-1910) m. Eliza (1856-1900-b. England) No doubt named for Annis' brother, Abel Matson.
Esther Dart (1844-?)
Annis then married George Washington "Squire" Dana (1800-1887) on Jan 5, 1845. George and Annis had seven children:
George Matson Dana (1846-1930s) m. Jennie Abby Jane Dubs (1857-1952)
Maria Dana (1848-1910) m. William Robert Miles (1835-1909)
Amanda Dana (1850-1850)
Charles Caleb Dana (1851-1920s) m. Henrietta "Etta" Cole (1855-1941)
Emma Dana (1855-1876)
Ida Malvina Dana (1858-) m. Clinton H Putnam (1851-)
Elmer Ellsworth Dana (1861-1940) m. Ola Sanders (1876-1961)
Since Squire Dana had previously married Maria Dutcher, Annis also had six step-children:
Carolina Matilda Dana (1829-1862) m. Marcellus Taylor (1822-1892)
Lester Dutcher Dana (1831-1901) m. Samantha Spencer (1834-1899)
Malvina Dana (1833-1857)
Maria Pamelia Dana (1835-1867) m. George R. Chappell (1834-)
Rosalia "Rosella" Dana (1838-1862) m. Silas Garber (1833-1905) Garber would become Governor of NE 1875-79.
George Dana (1843-1843)
Annis and George lived in multiple locales, including Alden, Illinois (1850 census), Durand, Illinois (1860 census), Racine, Wisconsin (1870 & 1880 censi), and Sacramento, California (per Squire's voter registration). Squire Dana died in 1887; by then, the couple had moved to Santa Barbara, California. The 1900 census found Annis still in Santa Barbara, living with youngest son Elmer Dana and family.
Annis died in Los Angeles County on Jan 14, 1910, about 2 weeks before her 91st birthday. She was interred with second husband George Washington Dana in Santa Barbara Cemetery.
