Joseph Thomas Bélanger was born in Ste-Clotilde-de-Horton, Arthabaska. Québec, Canada, the second of nine children born to Alexis Bélanger and Dénise Gélinas.
When he was about 9 years of age, the family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire.
He married Marie Adélina Lafond on 16 August 1897 in St-Boniface-de-Shawinigan, St. Maurice, Québec, Canada. They settled in Manchester for a short time where the first of six daughters was born. They soon migrated to Chicopee, Massachusetts where the other five daughers were born. Two of these children died in infancy. In 1917 the family made another move, to Northfield Vermont where they settled permanently.
Joseph was a carpenter by trade, building his own family home in Northfield Falls and running his own construction company there until shortly before his early death in 1933.

Joseph Belanger, 58, well-known Northfield contractor and builder died Monday afternoon at his home at Northfield Falls following a long period of ill health
Mr. Belanger was born in St. Boniface, P.Q., May 1, 1874, the son od Alexis and Denise Belanger. His parents moved to Manchester, Vt. (should be N.H.) when he was 9 years old. In 1897 he married Adeline Lafond of St. Boniface P.Q., and they lived for 22 years in Springfield, Mass, coming here to live 14 years ago.
Mr. Belanger leaves his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Harold Foss of Northfield Falls, Mrs. William O'Brien of Riverton, Joan, a nurse at Heaton, Hospital, Montpelier, and Cecile, a senior at Northfield High School; and two sisters, Corinne Belanger of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Dolar Nadeau of Alberta Can.
The funeral was held Wednesday morning at St. John Church.
