17 April 1916: Jacob Hildebrand, a former city highway commissioner, died at 8:30 o'clock this morning from uremia poisoning following a serious Illness of but four days. Although far from well for a long period of time Mr. Hildebrand was able to be about and was up town as late as last Thursday. He was 78 years old and leaves his wife and two children, Thomas Hildebrand, who is in the U. S. service at Portsmouth. N. H., and Mrs. Edward Rank, of this city. A brother, Frank Hildebrand, lives at Woodsborough, Md. Mr. Hildebrand was a bricklayer by trade and came to this city many years ago from Shrewsbury, York County. He served as a soldier in the Union army during the war and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was a member of the Odd Follows of Shrewsbury and Swatara Tribe, Red Men. Jacob R. Hildebrand was born in York County, the son of John & Catherine Hildebrand, and was the husband of Sarah Louise Beck Hildebrand, whom he married on October 5, 1869. In 1860, he was a mason living in Springfield Township, York County. He stood 5' 11" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 30, 1864, with Co. B, 209th Pa Inf, and promoted to corporal to date September 8. Honorably discharged with his company on May 31, 1865. [Information provided by Dennis Brandt]
