Irvin Atlas Dies Unexpectedly On Monday Afternoon
The community was saddened by the sudden death of Irvin Atlas which occurred shortly after noon Monday of this week. He had been engaged in trying to extinguish a fire which erupted about 11 a.m. Monday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Tackett whose home is located near the Atlas home in the Greenbrier community. Mr. Atlas suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a Cleburne Clinic where he passed away.
Irvin Harry Atlas, 50, was born March 18, 1916 to Harry Atlas and Stella Laramore Atlas and had made his home in this community with the exception of about twelve years when he resided in Houston.
A World War II veteran, Atlas served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until the end of 1945 and was engaged in five major battles during the war. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Alvarado. He had served as Chairman of the ASCS Committeemen in Johnson County for ten years and had been a director of the Grandview Co-Operative Association for several years.
He was married to the former Georgia Cole, who survives him. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jimmy Tackett of Grandview; one granddaughter; his mother, Mrs. Harry Atlas of Grandview; a brother, Sammy B. Atlas, also of Grandview, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church in Grandview, Wednesday, November 2, at 2 p.m.
Officiating ministers were Rev. O. B. Prater, pastor of the Grandview Baptist Church, and Rev. Robert E. Cook, pastor of the Alvarado First Methodist Church.
Pallbearers were Turner Key of Cleburne, Joe Tackett, C.H. Brooks, Jr. and Otis Cooper of Alvarado, Pat Kendricks of Burleson and Ernest Basham of Grandview.
Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Cleburne, directed by Clayton Kay Funeral Home of Grandview.
