Peter was the son of Petter Andersson Bälgman and Johannah Anderdotter, both born and raised in Sweden where they married and where the first five of their seven children were born.
In 1868 Peter accompanied his parents and four of his siblings to Quebec. The family remained there until moving to America later that year and finally settling in Riley County, Kansas. At some point along the line the family surname was changed from Bälgman to Bergman.
In 1882 Peter married Hilda Josephine Carlsson. They had four children: Nellie, Karl Luther, Carl S., and Lillian Marguerite Bergman.
